History

Established in 2005.

Hartzell House is located on the historic National Road in the southwestern section of Pennsylvania’s beautiful Laurel Highlands. This rare Carpenter-Gothic Victorian was built circa 1870, by a local entrepreneur, Judson Hartzell, upon his return from the Civil War. It remained in the Hartzell family until the current owners, David and Kitty Stemac, bought it from a direct descendant of Mr. Hartzell in June 2000.

The Hartzell house had been vacant for eleven years and was in need of major renovations when this veteran design-build team happened upon it while searching for a farmhouse in the area. It has been undergoing a series of careful renovations ever since.

The home was opened as a Bed and Breakfast in early 2006 and has hosted guests from every corner of the globe who come to the area primarily to visit Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece, Fallingwater. They often return to Hartzell House to explore the many treasures of this region from their favorite «home-away-from-home».

Business Owner

Kitty loves to feed people! What could be better than feeding people from all over the world right from her own professional kitchen?

She spent the majority of her life as a house painter/decorator, muralist, and design-build partner in her husband’s construction company, but still jokes that she doesn’t know what she wants to do when she is grown up.

She loves the field of nutrition and is trying to change peoples view of healthy eating one plate at a time. Her current dream is to actualize her own organic garden and raise happy chickens that produce healthy eggs.
