The SHAW LEGACY — a history of traditional tattooing

My grandfather, Bob Shaw (b. 1926), was a famous «Old School» tattooer who contributed over 50 years to the tattoo industry. In the 1960’s he helped pioneer stricter guidelines for tattoo artists and health departments to ensure cleaner and more sterile shops in the United States. He also invented the Bob Shaw Swing-​Gate, a certain type of tattoo machine still made today. He was president of the National Tattoo Association from 1983 – 1988 and was the third inductee into the Tattoo Hall of Fame. The Shaw family proudly continues his heritage.

My dad, Bobby Shaw, has been tattooing for over 33 years and is now in Austin, TX. My brother, Benny Shaw, has been tattooing over ten years and is in Aransas Pass, TX. My uncle, Larry Shaw, has been tattooing for over 35 years and owns Shaw’s Tattoo Studio in Houston, TX. My cousin, Lil’ Larry, has been tattooing over 13 years and works at the Houston shop.
