FireFly Farms offers nationally and internationally award-​winning goat cheese that features the distinct regional flavors of Mountain Maryland’s Allegheny Plateau.

History

Established in 2002.

FireFly Farms formed when a small group of friends decided to join forces and enter the world of domestic goat cheese making in 2002. At that time, FireFly Farms was the first and only producer of artisan goat cheese in Maryland and the Mid-​Atlantic region. Since then, a number of goat cheese producers have started operation in the State; FireFly Farms welcomes this growth in the industry and is proud of its standing as Maryland’s premier, and most-​awarded cheese maker.

FireFly Farms opened its expanded creamery & market in Accident, Maryland in 2011. Visitors to the creamery can see the cheese making and cheese aging processes through observation windows. In addition to the award-​winning line of FireFly Farms goat’s milk cheeses, the market offers a selection of American cow and sheep’s milk cheeses, wines, beers, and gourmet foods from the region.

Business Owner

Pablo’s love for fine food has dominated his professional life. He holds a Culinary Professional (CCT) and Pastry Chef certification from L’Academie de Cuisine in Gaithersburg, MD. Pablo held various chef positions in some of Washington’s finest restaurants before deciding to develop his considerable culinary career through cheese making.

After purchasing a home and property in Garrett County with his partner, Pablo co-​founded FireFly Farms and served as its original cheesemaker. Pablo’s inspiration is behind the first five FireFly cheeses: Allegheny Chevre, Buche Noire, MountainTop Bleu, and Merry Goat Round.

Pablo continues to support cheese making activites in the creamery, but now spends the bulk of his time supporting FireFly Farm’s marketing and distribution activities. He also serves as FireFly’s Chef de Cuisine.

Came back here for a second year in a row. They always have amazing cheeses and are extremely nice at explaining them and giving samples to try. They have a variety of cheeses that are made on the premises as well. If you come in on a day when the owners are there, you can get a great lesson in how each of their cheeses are made.
They also sell wine and some various other items to pair with the cheeses. Definitely make this place a tradition when I’m up in the area!

Just tried the Black and Blue, which should be called Crack and Blue. It was in my Winter CSA from Greensgrow. Needless to say, I will need to find more soon! Would like to visit Accident sometime. Sounds like a great spot.

Morgantown, WV
After driving by a couple times, I decided to stop a couple years ago. The cheese is pricey, but very good. I come out once or twice a year or see them at the Morgantown Farmer’s Market on Saturdays.
I’ve always had good experiences with the staff. They’re good about explaining the different cheeses and providing samples. I love the Cabra La Mancha and normally get about 1⁄3 pound to take home with me. I also sometimes get some Allegheny Chevre for crackers.

In addition to their excellent selection of cheeses they also have a nice array of complementary food and drink items here for you to pick up. But the cheese is obviously the star. Their Allegheny chèvre is one of the better fresh goat cheese I’ve had. Their aged cheeses are also excellent — I particularly enjoy the mountain top bleu, which is just barely a bleu cheese if you’re not into that sort of thing. But it has an excellent subtle bleu flavor. They have also just come out with their first cow’s milk cheese, a camembert-​type cheese, which is very good and may not be widely available yet. Worth a stop if you’re in the area!

This place seems like it could be a cool place and it sticks out in Garrett County as unique but I wasn’t impressed. I had one of their cheeses a few years ago when they first opened and I enjoyed it. I am not a gourmet cheese guy but it is fun to try every so often.
I have been meaning to stop in and see thee shop at some point and I finally did today. I was disappointed as it is a small unfriendly shop. Maybe the lady behind the counter looked at us as non-​buyers or she was extremely busy because she didn’t give us the time of day. A gentleman had a small table of 4 – 6 people which were doing a wine and cheese pairing so I understood his business. But this lady was just behind the counter cutting some cheese. I would have liked to try 1 – 2 cheeses but none were available as far as I know. I walked around the store and looked at the options. The cheese is too expensive for me and I wouldn’t have anywhere to store it while we drive. The associate never even gave me a cursory check and I walked on out the door. I made my stop here and my curiosity is solved. I would like to try some more of their cheese someday but it won’t be high on my list.

Accident, when did you get so classy?! One of the coolest little cheese shops I’ve ever been in. We went on a Saturday and the (handsome) owner greeted us, made conversation, showed us their cheese-​making section, and then led us to the counter where we had an amazing tasting of a variety of cheeses.
We knew we wanted to get about six cheeses with a range of tastes and wow, we were not let down as far as selection. The cheesemonger was very knowledgable, and offered us generous tastes of many cheeses. We chose six, did a tasting that night, and I can tell you which ones were outstanding…
1) The Bella Vita Espresso. WOW, there were 7 people participating in our at-​home tasting that evening and at the end we voted on our favorite. Bella Vita Espresso took the cake. It’s a sharp, hard cheese, rubbed with ground espresso. A perfect cheese to serve with dessert or at brunch.
2) The Allegheny Chèvre. Very well done. Light, creamy, perfect on a water cracker with a little bit of honey. I saw this as an option as a burger topper at Moonshadow Café the following night and wanted to order the burger just so I could experience this cheese again.
3) Cabra La Mancha. On the softer side, which isn’t always my preference, but this was terrific. Creamy and clean, the rind was the most flavorful part.
I bought a wine to pair it with (it might have been a tad overpriced but was good), and also couldn’t resist and bought one of their beautiful slate cheese boards from Brooklyn Slate. The gift selection was a nice feature. Firefly Farms is worth the drive from DCL if you’re looking for a fun afternoon activity, and a chance to try Maryland cheeses. I was thoroughly impressed and the visit was the highlight of my weekend!

If I lived in Accident, I would be a regular! We stopped in on a Saturday, tried wine, cheese, delicious bread and jam! Wine and cheese are two of my favorite things in this world, so of course I’ll love a shop that sells both, but the people working here make it even more enjoyable becauee they’re incredibly friendly, and helpful.
We purchased several cheeses:
black and blue, which was my absolute favorite and amazing with a glass of red wine; Irish porter, a bit too mild for my taste; merry goat round, also fairly mild, but really good; mountain top bleu, my second favorite; aged chedder, that was pretty good, despite the fact that I dont’t usually love chedder. We also purchaed a baguetter, an olive loaf, and a foccacia; all were frozen and at first, I thought they might not be great, but all of them were delicious!
I highly recommend this place!

very much a fan of cheese, even Wenslydale. Had to go in… Had to!
Very friendly staff & owner. Got a taste of most of the cheeses they had. Beware. If your not really into cheese you may be suprised at one of the prices. But oh the favors… The textures… I was in cheese heaven. I could have bought them all. But I did now want to have an argument with the wife over my cheese addiction. So I (we) settled on two.
Then onto the wine tasting which I believe was conducted by the owner. The wife tasted them all, I being the driver just tested the Pinoir Noir. Very friendly guy, gave a history of the place etc.
All in all, will be bak if in the area.

We made a reservation on the website for the wine and cheese pairing (on Valentines Day) and it was absolutely amazing.
Pablo and his staff were great! Pablo took the time to thoroughly explain each cheese and associated wine pairing. He answered every question we had on the whole cheesemaking process, which we knew nothing about before coming into the store. Pablo even took us on a tour of the facility and shared his ambitions for the business. There was plenty of food for us to sample and the spread had good variety. Not only was it really good cheese but it was a very warm and friendly environment. The crew at Firefly are passionate and care about what they do and that shows when you visit the store.
We found out Firefly goat cheese is sold at wholefoods and can now purchase it locally.
This is definitely worth a stop when in Deep Creek. The one thing I would note is that store isn’t very big so I would maybe call ahead if you plan on visiting with a large party.

A thousand million AWESOMEs raining down from the sky! My partner and I made a reservation for the 3-​cheese and wine pairing and we had a great time. The owners of Firefly were both there and were very friendly. Pablo walked us through our tasting and was very knowledgable! The antipasto, the chartucherie, the cheeses, the wines, and the added bonus dessert (and port) were all amazingly delicious! Great space, great wine and food selection, great people, great value… we will return!

I went here on a field trip for my Geography of Food Systems course. The class was given a tour and a thorough explanation of the chesse making and retailing process. The cheese was great, and the wine is even better. I had my first taste of Stella Rosa (Stella Bianco) wine and now it’s the only wine (brand) I want.

Amazing little boutique cheese and wine shop with lots of heart. Staff is friendly and helpful. Watch cheese being made on site! We were lucky enough to have a wine and cheese tasting hosted by them at a local inn we stayed at. We met one of the owners, Mike, enjoyed hearing his story. A «must do» in Garret County! We’ll be back!

What?! No review! Bwahaha stealing another First Review…
My first intro to Firefly Farms was actually due to Tastings Gourmet in Annapolis. I was an instant huge fan of the Merry Goat Round. When we were wandering around like tourists in the Deep Creek Area, I saw the sign for the creamery and I made us pull over to check it out. Because of Tastings Gourmet I have tasted many local cheeses, but very rarely do I ever get to visit the creamery!
So if you are into foo-​foo cheese and you are in the Deep Creek this is a must see. They have wine tastings, Cheese tastings and anything else they have in the store you will most likely be able to taste it.
The owners are fabulous! They put up with our crazy and entertained us through tasting all of their cheeses and wine. You also get a glimpse of the cheese room in case you are curious about how the cheeses are made.
This is a must see if you think you are a Foodie… or if you just love cheese.
PS. They have cheeses that are only sold here at the creamery!
