Fort Bayard Park is one of those hidden gems tucked away in a Washington, DC neighborhood, which is odd considering it borders two major streets. However, being at the corner of Western Ave and River Road, I guess people just drive by and don’t really notice it. The park features a playground, with equipment that is a bit dated.(Though the Friends of Fort Bayard Park are supposedly raising money to get newer, safer equipment.) There is also a small soccer field and a softball field. They can be worn by the end of the year, but are still good places to get some practice in whatever sport you like. I’ve even seen people practicing golf there. The south side of the park and the top of the hill also have several picnic tables great for reading or having a picnic without getting out of the city. The park does NOT have a dog park, so remember to scoop if you bring fido here. As parks in Washington, DC go, this is one of the better ones that is not a full recreation center. The FOFBP try to keep it as clean as possible and it is not in an area with high crime, drug use, or prostitution. So it is the perfect out of the way place to have a relaxing afternoon.
