This is a very nice pub, very close to the Bootham gate. There’s a small beer garden in back. There is beer, there is a garden on a higher level. Given that they don’t have the mosquito problem in the UK, it would be a shame to not take advantage of it on a nice day. We had our lunch and a pint, and were blissed out(well, and jetlagged). Inside, it’s the feel of a large, comfortable café. It’s very bright and airy, with comfortable places to lounge, eat, or check email. The beer selection was great. I had a wonderful lager. We were here at lunchtime, and I ordered a brie, bacon, and cranberry sandwich. It was an excellent sandwich, but not made to order, in case that’s your thing. The lady at the bar was very friendly and enjoyed talking up the drinks, making suggestions and offering sample tastes. Must be 18 to enter the pub.

Good beer well kept. Modern décor not a load of atmosphere.

An old haunt of mine and still a favourite whenever I’m visiting my parents. This is where I started on cider(Stowford Press, which is still lovely stuff on a hot day) to good European lager before learning to love ale. You’ve got it all here. The staff are knowledgable and friendly enough not to look down their nose at you if you aren’t a real ale buff. Not a traditional pub, has an airy, almost wine bar feel to it, but does everything a pub should. A bit pricey, but so is just about every non Sam Smiths pub in the UK these days(even Wetherspoons!)

A newish pub, owned by the York Brewery, with a bright, open feel in the one large bar area, with a small walled beer garden beyond. It’s very popular — no, make that often packed. The draw is the choice of up to nine real ales alongside Belgian and Czech bottled beers, and the fact it is a stone’s throw from the Minster. Other draws include a lack of piped music and no fruit machines; it’s also over 18s only, so no children. The ‘Three Legged Mare’ of the name actually refers to a form of gallows, not that that stops them selling a brew unique to this pub called ‘Wonkey Donkey’, also a pet name for the pub itself. Other brews include Centurion’s Ghost, Yorkshire Terrier and Guzzler. They also serve food, but I’ve not eaten here. Well worth a look during the quieter periods of the day.
