Old Grey Mare

This is tough to rate since I am not used to booking Inns but since we still didn’t have any accommodation before reaching the city we got a huge last minute discount for the night and we ended up there.
Thing is a night in our room would have been 100£ for two adults and two kids, I think it is expensive but when you see that in this city a bed in a dorm in a hostel is at least 18£ because York is so touristy you can start to consider it as an option if you are family. The bathroom is really old and not really at the best of its shape, I think most hostels are better nowadays. The beds were decent and even better since we hiked all day in the national park but I am really lightweight and we had a bed per person, I am not sure it will be that comfy otherwise…
We had breakfast included in the price which is nice, however it is not an English breakfast, no eggs, beans or bacon there. It is only toasts and cereals so nothing worth a lot compared to the price of the room.
It is located 15 minutes walk from the touristic places.
All in all I really don’t think it is worth the price but it seems to match the high prices for visiting in York.

The old grey mare is a little quietish pub which normally has its regulars sat in there. Its a bit of a dirty shabby pub but its not too bad and its quite cheap. Its kind of on the way into town so good just to stop off at on the way in.

Mind you, this is a review from my visit from 2004. Things may have changed.
This place was rather amazing, I thought.
We had walked around for over an hour trying to get to the hostel from the train station. Due to some bad directions and bad maps, it took us a very long time. Thus, we just wanted to eat as soon as possible.
I was rather hesitant to go eat there, but my friend and I were starving.
For about 5 quid we got a huge plate full of GOOD fried chicken, salad, chips and a drink. Though we were both incredibly hungry, neither of us could eat that much food. We even had cute little place mats!
