The Monk Bar gate is the most elaborate and tallest of York’s surviving mediaeval city gates, and was built in the early 14th century, to replace an earlier gate 100m to the North West. It is the only one of the city’s gates still to have its portcullis mechanism, complete with spiked railings — and it works, too!
Variously used as a prison and a store, it now houses the Richard III museum.
