Being from the heaving metropolis that is Bristol, we were expecting to visit Charlfield and find a quaint country pub tucked down a charming cobbled street. We soon discovered that the roads around Charfield are just like anywhere else, i.e. they are big and tarmacked and constant traffic thunders up and down them. So the Pear Tree is one one of these thunderous roads. Nevertheless it is a really welcoming little place. We went there for Saturday lunch which was an inordinately reasonable £8 for 2 courses. Mr B had very crunchy and fishy(in a good way) scampi while I had tasty local ham, egg and salad. I had asked for extra salad and to hold the chips(trying to control the calorie intake): when the meal came they added an extra fried egg to the plate, free, to make up for the lack of chips! Oh well! We noticed that the kitchen offers ‘cheesecake of the day’ and although I’m not usually a fan of cheesecake we decided to give it a go on the basis that if made every day the chef must be a bit of an expert. We weren’t wrong. A perfectly proportioned slice of heaven in the form of Chocolate and Baileys cheesecake, perching on its gooey crunchy biscuitty base, with a hint of dark chocolate sauce and cream to pour over, arrived and was duly savoured. So much for the calories… The staff here were sweet and friendly, the food was good to excellent.
