Description

Specialties

Traditional public house serving Cask Marque accredited real ale. It is very much a community pub used by people from all walks of life who enjoy the friendly ambience of the house.

We are well known for our well kept cellar and the high quality of our real ale and have appeared in the Camra Good Beer Guide for 4 four consecutive years.

Regular entertainment is provided and karaōke is held once a month which is very popular with our customers. Many people who had never sung before have taken the plunge here at The Richard Cobden and found themselves coming back for more time and time again.

We have an attractive courtyard beer garden where, weather permitting, we hold occasional barbecues.

Being very much a community pub we have raised over £5000 for charities over a five year period and our regular customers are always behind a good cause.

A warm welcome awaits new faces and we look forward to meeting you soon.

History

Established in 1868.

The Richard Cobden, formerly the Cobden Arms was constructed in1868 and has constantly served the local community ever since.

Built to serve the increasing population of Worthing due to the expansion of the local railway network we have seen the coming and going of some 16 publicans one of whom, Frederick Tupper, held the licence for some 40 years (1908 – 1948). Frederick is pictured in a photograph displayed in the pub during King George V’s coronation celebrations.

A similar picture was commissioned 100 years later by the current landlord during our celebrations of the marriage of Prince William and Katherine Middleton. This too is displayed in the pub.

Having been open-for-business through two world wars, served the community through the reigns of six monarchs, the pub has seen many changes through it’s long history but much has been done to maintain the character and community feel of this traditional English pub.
