Watford Football Club

I could explain every detail of this club, but watfor? What’s the point? And if you want to date one of the Ford family, watford do you wanna date? And if you wanna drive a ford, you have to be more specific. Watford do you wanna drive?
First-​Hand Experience: I like watching Watford play because they are cute and yellow and not too hard to beat. Until now, they are a Premier League team and anything is possible.
Since 2012 they’ve been rich and more interesting. But I saw them play nearly a decade ago and I enjoyed it. Their fans are really friendly, if not incredibly loud.
So anyway, I don’t know wat I’m talking about, but this club plays in shiny yellow and used to be owned by Elton John. They were a real high flying team in the 1980s. Good for them. They have been yo-​yoing between divisions a lot since then, they’re not a very big club, more of a suburban club. They have new Italian owners that are trying to turn them into a powerhouse and it culminated with them winning the Championship this season (2015) and gaining promotion back to the Premier League. The Italian owners also own Udinese and Granada, so well done to them.
Graham Taylor made his managerial name at this club. They finished 2^nd in the Prem in 1984, with John Barnes on the team (who later went to Liverpool and became a legend), and reached the 84 FA Cup Final.
They have a very international squad full of awesome players. Tony Coton and Luther Blissett were some of their best all time players. Brendan Rodgers once managed Watford and they did well. They’re known as the Hornets. So, a good club but they’ve never really achieved anything.

Watford FC, who play their home games at Vicarage Road, have had a funny season. Bought by an Italian family during the summer of 2012, they’ve brought in lots of players on loan from non-​English clubs. It took a while for them to gel, then they had a tremendous run of form that took them to second in the league. Sadly it turned sticky for a while and they find themselves just hanging on to a chance to grab one of the two automatic promotion slots, which would take them to the Premiership and squillions of pounds.
So that’s a potted history of their season, how about the ground. The first thing you notice is that it only has three sides, what with one of the long sides having been condemned several years ago and in need of ripping down and something shiny and new being built in its place. The other sides are just grand, giving it a capacity somewhere around 17,000 (apparently). I love the sound of seats hitting seatbacks as the home support stand up in anticipation of a goal.
Four stars: one because this is my team; one for the three good sides; one for the lovely pitch which was relaid during summer 2012; one for the great performances the team have put together this year. But one’s missing… because plenty of work’s needed to get that final stand done to make it a proper stadium!

A fabulous and well organised stadium, clean and well signposted. Parking can be a issue though

I go regulaly to Vicarage road to watch the Saracens Rugby.
I go mainly in the south stand and the facilities are good compared with other stadia. Its only downfall is the cold hotdogs. I can however vouch for the quality of the pies. Your best option in eating is buy fish and chips from the chippy on Vicarage road and take it in with you.

The least glamorous sporting ground I’ve ever been to. The atmosphere was a bit off, especially considering it was a sell-​out Heineken quarter-​final match.
Saracens fans were very unsporting, booing the opposition team when they ran out. I think that’s terribly bad form. They also booed when the opposition were attempting place kicks. That kind of stuff really sours a match for me. Additionally they would play music when Saracens scored, but not when the other team did.
The stadium itself is in the middle of a housing estate in Watford. It’s in a really shabby state and staff are not especially friendly. A good ten/​fifteen minute walk from the Met line station (which appears to be in the middle of nowhere when you first exit). I didn’t see any of the ATMs, newsagents or chip shops that Jamie Parkins talks about.
Certainly not an essential visit unless you are a Watford or Saracens fan.

At my Time in England was Elton John in the early 80^th Chairman of this Footballclub. I have been there many times as a Sportsjournalist for a German Newsagency. It is a nice and friendly Club. Never any problems with the Fans. Phantastic Atmosphere.

I may well be biased but Vicarage Road is my favourite place at 3pm on a Saturday.
As football grounds go, Vicarage Road remains of the old school. No modern day flat pack Ikea style stands here thank you very much. That said, 3 of the stands are of modern build but still over 10 years old each whilst the East Stand somewhat stands out as a shabby, but delightful, stand in need of some love and some care.
Capacity is around 21,000 and for the start of the ⁰⁷⁄₀₈ season some of the rough edges around the ground have been tidied. The toilets (mens and womens) have been upgraded, the concourses are now wider and cleaner and TVs have been installed so you can keep abreast of the game even when ordering a pint.
Access to and from the ground for away fans is easy, but the majority of home fans leaving The Rookery terrace do have to struggle up Occupation Road, a thin and slow moving walkway.
The ground is 5 minutes walk from the town centre and a further 10 minutes walk from Watford Junction train station. All in all very easy.
There are few ATM machines on the way to the ground but plenty of newsagents, fish and chip shops etc.
The Red Lion pub opposite the away end is perversely enough a «home fans only» drinking hole and tends to be used by regulars only. I’d suggest any of the pubs nearer to the town centre.
