High Oak Pub

The prime location in this pub are the large tables out front by the street (when it’s not raining obviously). I liked the interior too though. Especially because in there they were serving 3 real ales (2 of which I had never previously encountered, similar only in the fact that they were both very good. Oh and that they were served by a lovely barmaid).
I am going to go out on a limb here and say that this is the best pub in Ware and worth seeking out (as it is away from the main roads in the town).

This is a local pub, for local people! It does feel a bit League of Gentlemen when you walk in to this bizarre little pub. It’s slap bang in the middle of a residential road set some way back from Ware High Street, and if you didn’t know it was there you would never find it.
It’s essentially a converted terraced house, maybe two originally, with all the fixtures and fittings you’d expect of a place like that. They’ve made an effort with a small decking area at the front of the pub with some tables and chairs on, and there’s also one out the back, just beyond a conservatory that doubles as a games room. The one good thing is that during a major sporting event they will change the games room into another TV room (a normal CRT TV is put on top of the pool table!) and arrange some chairs out there. There is another largish wall mounted screen in the main pub too for normal use. There might be a case for saying that the fact that this isn’t a large chain pub with no personality should bump it’s rating up, but for me it’s just too far in the opposite direction for that.
They have a small selection of drinks appropriate to the size of the place, and that’s it’s main drawback. It’s tiny, and when there are a lot of people in there it is uncomfortably so. The regulars, whilst not intimidating in any way, just make it feel a bit odd. When you walk in you expect a man in the corner to stop tickling the ivory, a set of double saloon doors to swing shut and a tumbleweed to bounce silently along in front of you. Fortunately, none of this actually happens, although you’ll spend the rest of your time there feeling like an doomed extra in a John Wayne flick.
I’ve never been that entwined in the fabric of a pub to be classed as a ‘local’ and places like this make me thankful of that — it can make for an uncomfortable experience for an outsider and I wouldn’t want other people to feel like that.
If you want to go to a quirky pub that screams you’re not from around these parts, are you? then go for it, but otherwise I’d not go to the trouble of seeking it out. Just keep riding your horse on past this waterin’ hole, partner.
