Although this pub is near a main road, don’t discount it!
I love this pub, it’s so cozy inside, there are a some sofas and a small fireplace.
It suits a hot summers day when you can enjoy a pitcher of Pimms for £10 in the outside area, or sharing a hot chocolate on that blustery winters day.
They do great food, it wasn’t overly busy so the food arrived swiftly. I had a stuffed aubergine, which was huge and had a lot of flavour.
Although there are many great pubs in this area, this is one of my favorites.

Three of my friends and I meet most week’s for a bite to eat and chat in the evening. We live in different directions and The Volunteer is ideally placed for all of us. As this is the case we have tried it many times, before and after refurbishment.
The pros The bar staff are helpful. Prices reasonable and the pub is clean.
The con Don’t eat here! The food is appalling. Burnt chips, VERY overcooked, dry burger. Dishes that are cold in the middle as they have obviously come out of the freezer and gone in the microwave etc. Every time we go there we say never again and then, as it is convenient, we give it another try, but no, it always disappoints.

Had gorgeous roast here after a drive out on a late summer day. Massive portions, great service and a lumpy bumpy to die for. Will be going back.

Pub just on the edge of Epping Forest. Big pub, nothing amazingly special but fine for pub grub (they’ve got an overworked deep fat fryer!) and a pint or two after a stroll in the forest.
