Jacks D.I.Y. Centre

In a world where big businesses and multi-​national corporations dominate, it’s nice to find an example of the little guy, the small local business succeeding in not only staying afloat, but in being the business of choice for its customer base… Jacks DIY is a perfect example of one such business. This is a classic example of a hardware store as you’d expect from days of old… stacks of stock on display in the streets outside, shelf upon shelf and room upon room full from floor to ceiling with the latest DIY stock, from tools to materials, nails and screws through to doorbells and stepladders.
I had cause to visit the shop recently and was impressed by the prompt and old-​fashioned service given by the red-​shirted staff who greet you inside the main entrance. Each of them is clearly knowledgeable on the stock and the DIY tasks that the average customer undertakes. They are helpful and practical in the service they supply, and large items can be delivered locally free of charge (look out for the distinctive yellow transit van as it weaves its way around Sale and the surrounding area. And if all that wasn’t good enough, they have a signed picture of Bobby Ball (formally of 1980’s comedy duo) ‘Cannon and Ball’ behind the counter…
