As stores devoted to literature go, this bookshop in Polesworth is one of the ‘old curiosity’ variety. Situated atop some stone steps, this pretty massive shop is slightly imposing. A sign informing children that they’re not allowed in without an adult adds to this tone, along with the permanent metal grills that seem to keep the books in. Curious! As for the stock, the second-hand tomes on sale, cover every conceivable interest or hobby, and the books are handily catalogued so you can find your way around the warrens with relative ease. Despite its bookish diversity, this place specialises in maps, plans and atlases, which seems slightly surprising given the shop’s introspective atmosphere, which can sometime go hand in hand with village life. The range of maps is truly impressive though and well worth a visit if you’re off on your travels or want to frame a favourite part of the world to brighten up your walls.
