The Balnoon has changed owners since 2011 and whilst the new owners have gone to considerable lengths to improve the décor inside and out, it has sadly lost the old eccentric charm it once had. I wish I could write a more positive review since the changes should have been more welcome and the chap that served the carvery was certainly very friendly. On the down side, the food was only just warm enough and the price was high for a self-service meal I thought. The waitresses seemed disinterested in asking if our meal was OK or if we wanted drinks and we ate dessert with our dirty plates still on the table. The restaurant was practically empty at 3pm so we expected better service really. It’s not bad but I’ve had better carvery food at half the price.

I was recommended to try the Balnoon for the Carvery by a friend in Penzance while I was staying over Easter weekend 2010 What a great place this is, the location(hard to find) is wonderful, welcomed by a lovely ginger cat on the door, and such a warm welcome once we entered the bar. We(4 of us) had a table looking at the tempting dessert fridge, what a way to make sure you have a dessert, even when you know you shouldn’t! . I ordered the fish cakes, which were not the best I have ever had, think they were over cooked, or been re cooked but still enjoyed them. The Carvery was the main,(but they also had specials & full menu if you preferred) and tempted by the sight of Roast beef or pork I opted for a little of each, with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, and such a massive selection of vegetables and sauces I could not get it all on my plate! It was fantastic, and cannot recommend it highly enough, it was all fresh and piping hot, often with a carvery it is look warm and over cooked, it is a credit to the owners, chef and staff. After such a meal I had to wait quite a while to manage a dessert and even then had one to share, I opted for Chocolate moose and it was first class, other choices were lemon meringue, trifle, or death by chocolate. It was a great evening, and next time I am back in Cornwall I will head straight back to the Balnoon, along with my new fav pizza joint Ricardos in Penzance it is great when on a week away to find such new great places to eat when so often now, it is an expensive disappointment with poor service on top. Give these places a try, I am glad I did.
