The Slug accurately describes the speed of the service, and the taste of the food. The one star goes to a lovely location on the Thames. Do yourself a favor and spend your money at one of the many other nearby eateries.

Beautiful location and friendly staff. We were here for a late lunch so unfortunately they had ran out of a lot of dishes, but they gave us alternatives which were delicious. Service was a little slow considering it wasn’t overly busy, but I would recommend this place for a nice relaxed day

Went here on a Sunday afternoon after some shopping with friends and searching for a place to eat. S&L isn’t my first or second choice for a meal but given the circumstances, we went in. As most people would agree to, the view is very charming-just by the Thames river in Richmond. It is situated next to The White Cross(a pub I can never get a seat at-cry cry). The waiter was a very nice and attentive Welsh guy who kept us happy and laughing! If only I could remember his name …: / I ordered the peppercorn steak with chips which is standard but satisfied the stomach at the time. Their cocktails are usually good so we had a few which were 2−4−1, can’t beat that. S&L is a good place for groups and for watching a match but this particular S&L didn’t have the upbeat environment of it’s other chains such as the one in Uxbridge.

One star goes to the excellent river location. However after being away from England for 6 years, what was once a higher end chain bar/restaurant is now pretty much an overpriced Weatherspoons. Poor food, poor service — I had a vegetarian full English breakfast that not only took 40 minutes to turn up(the place was quiet!), my cutlery turned up with food stuck to it seemingly from the dishwasher, and when the food did turn up, well, my 2 year old nephew could have made a nicer breakfast. Overcooked sausages, dry eggs, and the ‘oven baked potato wedges were soaked in oil and were clearly deep fried. The tea pot was heavily stained and broken, and the tea itself had bits floating in it! Total and utter rubbish — won’t be going back here again, even if I was paid to.

We went here last week for a girls pre Christmas get together. I have been to this and other Slug and Lettuce pubss before and they are generally fairly consistent. They had the table decorated beautifully for us and the service was fantastic. Our waitor(Casper from Poland) could not have been nicer or more attentive. The problem was the food — it was awful. We ordered from the Christmas menu and had to give them our order in advance so there should be no excuse. Not one of us was happy with the meal we got(there were eight of us) and we made sure to let them know. It was such a disappointment. If you are going there over the festive period avoid the Christmas menu like the plague, but do say hello to Casper;)

It’s a Slug and Lettuce isn’t it. Unless you’re a visitor to the UK, you probably have good idea of what to expect from this chain — mediocre food, wipe-clean décor and barely interested staff. BUT… on a rugby day, or a sunny day, this spot is as good as any other in Richmond. Right on the river, walking distance to Twickenham and plenty of big screens for watching the match if you don’t have a ticket. Good for a group gathering.

No no no… The chicken breast needed a chainsaw. And it was so average. Had an Italian guest with me and it was embarrassing. I haven’t gone back. I went to a s&l in Faringdon and it was great. Don’t let the riverside location make you complacent folks…

Great place for sun downers. The 241 cocktails are a must and it’s a great location if you are looking to start in Richmond.

Half price food on a Monday is always a must! &241 cocktails — amazing in the summer months. Excellent location — right on the river. Always a really positive and lively atmosphere with friendly staff.

As I write this review in September, the hazy hedonistic days of summer have now unfortunately passed us by; however if one feels bold enough to brave the encroaching evening chill, this is still one of the best places in Richmond to experience a drink al fresco. Let’s be honest; as corporate, generic wine bars /pubs go, Slug & Lettuce is a name synonymous with the best of them. However, this Slug & Lettuce has the benefit of being located in one of Richmond’s most desirable drinking locations, plonked right on Richmond riverside. The inside of the pub leaves a lot to be desired; in summer there is often a stale, unsavoury aroma inside the bar, which has been noted on many occasions. However the real pull for this pub is summertime, when a plethora of Richmond drinkers flock there in order to take advantage of a spectacular river view. A recent addition of 2-for-1 cocktails at £4.95(I think these are on Friday nights and at weekends, but you may need to check this first) is a crowd-pleaser, and for those who prefer beers, a good range of lager is provided, including the refreshing Japanese lager, Kirin. However, at the end of this day, this still remains a Slug & Lettuce — those looking for a more intimate, independent affair are advised to walk 20 metres to the adjoining ‘White Cross’, where equally wonderful riverside drinking is offered.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. Do it. (And on rugby day’s, with Twickenham stadium close by, they do Guinness for £2.50. Bargain)

The location is undoubtedly the biggest draw for this venue. Set high up on the river bank in Richmond the outside space gives you an excellent view along the river and is a stunning location for a sunny afternoon. The staff were very friendly on my last visit there and I can certainly recommend the chocolate brownie on the dessert menu! The rest of the menu covers all the bases really, and at just a short stroll from the tube station it is an excellent place to while away a Sunday afternoon.

i like this place period, Got to love the location. The pub next door boasts its actually in the Thames river at high tide. This place is right on the left side of an OLD boat ramp, Rental boats Bikes and Prams(Strollers) everywhere. I love these places in the winter, Nothing but birds and the ocasional old salt napping on the old benches. Old in London… I was in this pub«the Cittie Of York» (22 High Holborn, WC1), which has been the site of an inn since 1420. I know its a chain but the other Slug i went to in Central London was just as nice. Clean Upbeat and good food/Service. In the summer its fantastic to watch the boats and people on bikes go by. Alot of tables outside and nice inside with AC. Standard Pub fare with some nice twist’s I had Ciabotta strips with Hummis and red pepper and pesto as a starter classy how the chef serves it up. My wife loves the fish cakes with nice looking rocket salad. Many stars live around here never know who you will see. Me i see stars in the majority of people here after they had a few pints. A.B.

As an American, i saw my first«famous» person: Richard Ashcroft from the band The Verve. Surprisingly was very humble and low key! I like the Slug & Lettuce chains, and was thorougly impressed with their Sunday roast — roast potatoes AND mash!

One of a few bars on the river that benefit from their location. This stretch of river is the place to be in the summer and consequently this is one of the bars to be seen at. Nothing amazing here as it is The Slug and Lettuce and it happens to be on the River. It does most things well including the food and you know that you can expect an o.k. time. During the summer when it is hot just about everyone wants to be here, enjoying a glass of wine or a few beers and hanging around outside socialising. Good for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner, you know that the food will be there or there about’s and the sort of place you could meet for a business meeting. To be fair if you took away the setting it would be the same as any other Pitcher and Piano — oops sorry I meant Slug and Lettuce.

With a perfect location on the riverside, this is a great place to unwind in the summer months while sipping on an ice cold beverage. Great place to watch the big games too like the rugby and football on their big screens. Drinks are reasonably priced too.

You know, I’m going to give The Slug a surprising 3 stars. Why? Well — the riverside location can’t be faulted, almost as good as the White Cross. Also — they’ve never once let me down on having real ale in either. So, although it’s sort of one of those bars that strikes fear into your heart when a colleague suggests it for a leaving do, it’s not actually that bad! Get a pint, go outside, feed the geese!

It can be quite confusing knowing where to go when you fancy a drink or a snack after a riverside walk in Richmond. Spoilt for choice but often overcrowded. I was recently here with an Italian friend who was a Richmond virgin. It was late teatime on a cold winter weekday and she was craving a traditional tea and scone with a riverview… Not that easy in reality so we opted for the Slug. It was unusually quiet; we had our choice of seats with a view. The service was sweet, efficient and patient. The tea just right but alas no scone… We were both happy(but still peckish) and will definitely return for a relaxing quiet-hours drink in friendly, scenic, good value surroundings.
