History

Established in 1600.

The Royal Oak Inn is a 17th Century Coaching Inn, though we no longer have rooms to let nowadays. It got its name from the Oak timbers used in its construction. At that time it was illegal to build with new Oak timber as it was required for the construction of the Royal Fleet of Warships. It was only once these ships were decommissioned that the timber could be used in construction. Hence, The Royal Oak!

In Painswick there used to be many more Pubs/Inns than the the two remaining; thought to be as many as 17.
