Prob depends what you are looking for but if you want a proper dive bar(cheap drinks, pool, locals chatting loudly, good tunes) then this is the place for you. Read the fun graffiti on the pink walls of the girls toilet. Bar staff are friendly and welcoming to a stranger despite it looking like you are walking into a club.

Went here on a Monday night for an improv show with some friends and it turned out to be quite a pleasant evening. The upstairs is small and very intimate feeling. Buy tickets ahead of time if you want chairs of tables. When we purchased at the door, there was standing room only but the venue is so small that you can still see perfectly. The cover that evening was really cheap(about £3.50) and drinks were reasonably priced as well. The acoustics are good and the crowd is quite enjoyable. Seems like the sort of place that would host a great local concert. Nice selection at the bar of lagers and ciders on tap as well. Will have to make another trip there if I’m ever in the area again.

An average old style Oxford boozer down an alleyway off the High Street that’s dragged out of the ordinary by its regular, reasonably priced gigs and entertainment — jazz, comedy, indie all getting a look in. Quiz machines and a pool table, as well as a reasonable drinks selection mean the downstairs area is normally fairly busy, and on nights with music it can get rammed as people loiter downstairs before heading in. Without the draw of the music this probably wouldn’t be a pub worth going out of your way for; but it’s a good stop-off on a pubby amble down the High Street, not bad for an afternoon or early evening pint, and certainly worth heading into a bit early before a gig.

The Wheatie is great as a down-to-earth, intimate gig venue. It’s got a great atmosphere and it costs little more than a drink for most nights. There’s stand-up comedy some Mondays, Spinn Jazz on Thursdays and various local bands at weekends. There’s no need to pre-book, but it can get pretty crowded on popular nights. The downstairs is an ordinary pub. It’s down an alleyway and going to the toilets can be a bit scary for a lone female, negotiating your way past smokers in the dark. I’ve not heard of any violence and it’s fine with a big group of friends, but it’s not the nicest pub to visit in the evening if there’s no entertainment on.

Two floors — pub downstairs, hall upstairs. They quite often have gigs or comedy shows or something going on. On these nights it can be very busy. Try and check whats on before going. The beers and lagers are good as there is a large-ish selection. I have been here a couple of times, once to see a band and once just for drinking. The atmosphere was very different between the two nights. The main thing about this place is that it needs a good lick of paint. Or two. To be honest it looks a bit of a dive. And some of the staff look like their in Hells Angels. But dont let this put you off. Its an ok pub and a good pub on entertainment nights.
