I’m guessing this place has improved since the poor reviews in 2008⁄9 because we just moved to Summertown and were nervous it wouldn’t be a great neighbourhood pub. That’d be terrible because it’s the only one pretty much in the area. Well, we were really pleasantly surprised. We’ve been there twice so far, solid drinks, great food actually for a reasonable price and hearty portions. Both times the staff has been really pleasant — which is saying a lot for England overall — but they were really friendly. Even at our favorite pubs the staff doesn’t extend themselves. There are 2 gardens, one out front and a lovely one out back that’s pretty big. I’d agree the inside is a little dingy, but kind of in a kitchy way though it does smell of old smoke near the tvs since that’s where people watch the games, I’m sure. We’ll go back often and we’d highly recommend.

Very nice pub in Summertown, although considering there aren’t any surrounding competitors, that’s a limited response. Nothing special to draw those from the city centre out to it, but the beers and food are resonably priced, and there are televisions to watch the sport. This is particularly good as they are a pub regularly showing Sky 3D matches.

Uninspiring place at best, and at worst unpleasant if you go when it’s busy. It’s the only pub in Summertown so I guess they don’t have to try very hard. Avoid the food; there’s plenty of better options around it

Nice little pub in Summertown. Spent a while here at the end of exams in December, and I don’t know if it would make me take the walk to Summertown just for the pub, but it will probably be the place I stop when I am in Summertown already. Two rooms, good enough beers on tap, great service and a friendly atmosphere. Good place to bring a group if you are in the area.

I’ve heard mixed things about this place, but generally of the negative variety. When I went in, it wasn’t peak time and it was easy to get a glass of Coke. It tasted flat but not watered down, and no different to plenty of other pubs. I really want to like the place as it’s got such a lovely name, but sadly many friends have had bad experiences. I think a lot depends on who’s serving you; many of the staff seem quite sullen and don’t respond well to requests for more ice/drink/drinks they don’t have. The food is worth avoiding by all accounts, and although the interior is infinitely better since the smoking ban, it’s still very gloomy and uninspiring.

I was surprised when my husband suggested meeting here for lunch as I remembered it as a sausage and chips sort of place and very dark. It is still very dark at the back but the food has definitely improved. The décor has changed as well, though I can’t help thinking that painting the walls dark brown has done nothing to lighten up the back of the pub. The garden at the back is cramped but flowery and one of the few places in Summertown where you can eat outside but not suffer from the noise of the traffic or the dust of the road works(what are they doing to the road?)
