Tasty, quick, cheap. This is pretty much everything I want a chippy to be. Cod, chips and peas came to £5.45 and after eating it I was fit to burst and very happy. It’s also in a handy location opposite Chorlton gym so if you’ve made the mistake of doing some exercise and need to replenish calories, you’re in luck.

I love a good chippy. I really do. There’s nothing quite like soft fish in crispy batter and deep fried potatoes with the tang of vinegar and the comforting gloop of mushy peas. It’s almost criminal that in a North West city there are so few stonking chippies so imagine my delight when I discovered this one in Chorlton. I’m a fan of Holland’s pies and they should be in residence at any good chip shop, so I was pleased to find them here(delivered fresh every morning). It’s popular, as you can tell from the long queues you’ll see snaking from the counter on Friday and Saturday nights, and it would be with such huge portions at teeny prices. It’ll certainly fill you up and won’t lighten your pocket. And there’s even a range of pop in glass bottles! That’s the best way to ingest your favourite fizzy beverage.

The Baths Supper Bar is a cracking little chippy. Indeed, I’d go so far as to say they do the best fish and chips in the whole of South Manchester. Yes, they really are that good! It appears that I’m not alone in having this opinion, which is why, every Friday & Saturday night, you’ll see long queues of hungry Chorltonites snaking out of the door and down Manchester Road. Even better, they serve an excellent range of Hollands Pies(arguably the KING of pies) which are delivered there fresh ever morning. Their staff were once even kind enough to put a pie in a barm cake for a very hungry friend of mine to eat on his way home. Now THAT’S what I call good service! If that wasn’t enough, they do a fine line in pop in glass bottles, and are always sure to cook your dinner right in front of you, so you always know it’s fresh. Portions are always huge and delicious, and if that wasn’t enough, you can also usually get change for a fiver. Indeed, if you’re looking for a bargaintastic teatime treat, then you could do much much worse than going to the Baths Supper Bar for a bag of chips and a carton of mushy peas.

‘Salt and vinegar?’ are likely to be the only words you will hear from any member of staff at this Chinese chip shop. In response to this question my friend clearly and politely stated, ‘no thanks.’ The woman serving us proceeded to pour lashings of vinegar onto her chips. I probably would have been too polite to complain, but she wasn’t. The lady didn’t seem put out, she simply and silently threw the chips away and served up a fresh bag with no salt and vinegar. I think that’s probably the best customer service you could expect here, but it was sufficient, and no-one comes to buy fish and chips for a chit-chat. The portions are very generously sized and reasonably priced — around £5 for a large fish, chips and peas. The food is always hot and tasty. There is usually a large queue in the evenings, and the recent opening of competitor Atlantic doesn’t seem to have affected this Chorlton favourite. Just make sure you go after your visit to the baths opposite. I once made the mistake of going first, and it really didn’t make for a pleasant swimming experience!
