Govin’s is a newwsagent near the MMU union and alongside the many takeways of Popolinos, Babylon etc It’s pretty efficient and big for a newsagents and stocks everything possible! It’s like a mini Tesco with cheaper prices. The drink collection is huge and so is their alcohol! I typically love Sambuca and they stock all, white, black and even pink(the raspberry one), it’s great for shots and variety only makes it better! They also do phptocopying services for amazingly cheap prices, wait for it, Its 2p!!! yes only 2p and I used to think 3p is dirt cheap! So you can photocopy a whole book and it’ll cost you about say £2 when it actually was £30! Anyway that’s the old studenty ways to save money! Apart from that, it’s a great little place, though Govind doesn’t engage in much conversation!

I don’t know why most convenience stores don’t have a photocopying section attached, especially in Manchester where every student and their dog needs things photocopied and printed minutes before the deadline. Govin has one, and only charges 2p per sheet, instantly bumping it up a star to four. It also sells the usual convenience store stock, alongside a few more random items, but it’s the photocopying that really stands out.

This place has recently changed its name from Govind’s to Govin News Agents. Where did the ‘d’ disappear to? I really don’t understand. Is it a typo? Absolutely similar to Metro Convenience Store next door, Govin seems to have slightly less stock, with a basic slection of bread, eggs, milk and the like. It gets a point for offering photocopying at an incredibly cheap 2p per page. If you’re a student with a handing-in deadline and you fancy beating the library queues and saving a few pennies whilst you’re at it, Govin is the place to go. Govin News Agents, just like Metro, also sells odd items. Coloured drinking straws? A football? People must be buying this stuff I guess…

Govind’s news has those 20p independents that you can easily pick up from the first shelf and rush off back to the commute of oxford road. These are amazing little tokens of papers, especially if you’re a student with no contact with the outside world. This is a very real problem for us; seriously, my household is too tight to have a TV licence thus no television, when you wake up at around the 10 mark everyday and spend the time getting things done during the nocturnal hours our current affairs can be very poor. Govind’s also stocks crisps, sweets, those bits you forgot from the supermarket, half a ton of pornography on top of the magazine shelves and stationary bits.

Govind’s is a little weird. Apart from its large and varied magazine and paper section, which is arguably one of the best on/near campus(especially if you’re a reader of porn of dubious quality), it sells mad stuff. Like those tiny ‘stick’ sachets of coffee you get in hotels, and notepads that, I found out too late, can’t even take simple Bic biro ink without going all weird and blotty. There’s a hell of a lot of bits and bobs of food, milk, bread, mad crackers, protein shakes, and a really decent confectionery selection. Also, they stock the pink Rubicon, which the boyf goes crazy for. It’s like catnip or something. I have two gripes about Govind’s: gripe 1 is that they charge a colossal £2 when you use your card, which is just mad. Gipe 2 would have to be that when it showed up on my statement, it said Khimji News, cue hours of me going«what is Khimji News? I have never been to a place called Khimji News!» Followed by me calling my bank, who told me my chip and PIN had been used, leading to me canceling the darn card. So, although that *could* be read as a story about me being a bit of a spaz, I like to blame it on Govind. £2 charge? 2 stars, Gov.

I don’t know when it started but there seems to be a bit of an on-going turf war between Govind’s Newsagents and their neighbour newsagent Metro Convenience Store. To the best of my knowledge there’s been no fist fights or smashed windows involved, just a competition over which business can offer customers the lowest prices. So far, Govind’s News seems to be winning with 2p for photocopies and Half Price on all the daily and weekends tabloids and broadsheets. Handily, they also sell beer, milk, bread, soup, crisps, baked beans, spaghetti hoops, toilet roll and chocolate bars — making it a bit of a one-stop shop for students and locals on a budget.
