Ancoats is an area that’s really worth a visit if you’ve got a spare few hours on a Sunday and the weather is sunny out. It’s the area of Manchester just East of the Northern Quarter, and is steeped in history due to its past as the industrial hub of Manchester. Back in nineteenth century, there used to be cotton mills and other factories employing thousands upon thousands of immigrants. The area was a major reason for the construction of the Ashton and Rochdale canals so near by. During the twentieth century many of the old terraces were flattened, but lots of the huge, old, red-brick factories remain. Some are still in use for various things, some have been turned into flats, and some lie derelict. The whole area has a kind of criss-cross system of streets. Some of the architecture on show is incredible and it’s really worth a wonder round. I really like to take a walk around Ancoats on the weekend and take it all in. The area is so quiet as it slowly gets redeveloped and in a few years it should be a creative hub of Manchester for living and business.
