Zigfrid von Underbelly is a food house, DJ bar and a live music venue that depending on the day and time has either a relaxed lounging atmosphere or a high energy party feel. The «flexitarian» food menu has something for meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans alike.
History
Established in 2003.
11 Hoxton Square, flattened by bombers in the Second World War, it lay unused until Hackney council built a workshop on the site in the 60s.
This was abandoned in the 80s recession and recolonised by Goldsmiths College Art graduates in 1988.
One of them was Paul Daly, an Irish artist & designer. After his fellow artists moved on, Paul was part of building a new building at number 11 in 2000.
Paul had been designing bars and restaurants all over the country and in 2003 he had finally arrived to a point when he could open his own — Zigfrid.
Underbelly was added some time later to the basement.
And then the name was complete: Zigfrid von Underbelly of Hoxton.
