We ordered beef phở and grilled fish(Cha ca) — both of them were just ok. Service was pretty bad as waiters were busy hanging out with each other and made us feel like we were invisible…

*update* prices have been jacked up and this, while still good food, no longer falls into the cheap eats bracket for me. — — — – I love it. Great, healthy(mostly!) food at really reasonable prices. Lovely laid back atmosphere. You can go in along or with a big group, always a great experience.

Cant get enough of Tre Viet. The food is amazing, and have had excellent service there everytime. I cannot start without having the Sweet and Sour Prawn Soup, and another favorite starter is their Salt and Pepper Squid. I try to order a different entre every time. That being said, I’ve loved every one of them excluding the Aubergine. I did order the slow cooked pork as advised in other reviews, it was very good, but didnt satisfy the vitnamese itch as the others dishes do so well. The noodles are great here, and the flavors will have you wanting to come back the next day. Addicted to Tre Viet.

Delicious fresh food — friendly service. Relaxed atmosphere with classic Vietnamese décor. I will be going back. Try the Mango and Papaya salad and the Lemongrass Vermicelli with beef.

You will be impressed, at least I was. I come from a long term love of Vietnamese food and this only made my love grow stronger. Get off on Hackney Central overground and walk here to be amazed with delicious options from Phở, to crunchy noodles and sweet and sour options. Veggies are gonna be in heaven since there is a vegetarian option with tofu for anything you want. We came here for lunch and chose from the Lunch menu deal(£8), this includes an individual appetizer and a main course. I had the vegetable soup(which was not memorable, and that’s probably why the fifth star is missing) and a sweet and sour chicken with rice. Dishes came fast, and we were so impressed by the taste that the table was silent for about 15 min. You know what they say: «when the food is good, you eat in silence» — this should say something about Tre Viet! ;)

One of the best Vietnamese restaurants in London. The food is authentically flavoured and the service is speedy and friendly. It’s great value and you’ll be hard pressed to find a better pork dish than their Slow Cooked Pork in Caramalised Coconut. Shame they no longer have Banh Coun on the menu — but at least you can replace that with some amazing summer rolls. Definitely check this place out if you’re on Mare street.

The best and most friendly Vietnamese on Mare Street. Really decent quality food, tastes fresh and is always served in big portions. Décor and layout is relaxing, even when it’s busy, which is always! Love the plants in ceiling… oh and try the aubergine dishes. Always overlooked, ways delicious.

Pretty decent place, paid a visit here few weeks ago with some mates, we were searching for some Asian food place. It doesn’t look like anything big, expensive or spectacular. The food was fairly nice and yet cheap for this part of London. The service and the portions compensated for the poor looks, staff were polite and welcoming. Everything was serves in really big portions, some of them were enough for two, which is likely to get me visiting this place more often. If you feel really hungry and feel like you can eat a horse on your own, this is the place you can stop at.

I was compelled to write a review as I saw some of the really bad ones on here. I live in Dalston, kind of equidistant from all the Vietnamese restaurants, and this is my Vietnamese restaurant of choice. I like Green Papaya but they just don’t have the wide-ranging menu of Tre Viet and this seems a lot closer to what I ate in Vietnam. Some of the ones on Kingsland Road seem to have a bit too much Chinese for my taste. Things I enjoy are the fish cooked with turmeric and dill, the Vietnamese pork belly, the pork with betel leaves was really tasty too, but we do order different things every time and I enjoy most of it. I can’t comment on their phở though as I never order it. Service can be a bit dodgy but what can you expect for the price. I’m a chef myself and don’t eat out much because I’m often disappointed, so what can I say? I spend my money here.

I thought this was good reasonably priced fare. Portions were adequate for the price given the location i.e. now ‘trendy’ Hackney Service was very efficient and friendly. Wine list limited and, as you’d expect, a little overpriced but not excessively so.

Came in here as we could not be bothered to cook on an evening, I found the place to be a pretty standard establishment, which was fine as we were not looking for anything fancy. On first impressions it feels like a basic café but for the bamboo and other basic oriental décor. They sat us on a shared table, so it was pretty cosy what with it being quite busy for a Tuesday night, but that said, I didn’t actually mind and thought the ambiance was nice, with a pleasant background chatter to our conversations. The food arrived pretty fast after we ordered giving the impression that it was all pre-prepared and just warmed up. Despite that it was not bad, we had a ¼ crispy duck with soups and noodle dishes. It tasted good, not salty or anything. But still nothing special. I would say you judge a place based on your expectations, and to be honest, I was not expecting much so I left pretty satisfied. If you want a place which serves solid good oriental food for a chat with friends on an evening, then I would recommend it. If you are after something a little more special or authentic then I would keep looking if I were you.

A great place to experience Vietnamese cuisine, although the chef I am guessing is from North Vietnam, therefore the southern Vietnam dishes taste a bit bland(the Northern way I suspect). But otherwise, 90% of the food made is great and I can say that if you are unafraid of exotic food I suggest you come here to try it out. I cannot recommend specific dishes since many would just order my recommendations and stick with them every time they go, so what I will say is that try out something that looks interesting to you, and you would not be dissapointed. The safe ones will always go for thr safe choice, Spring Rolls. If so, go for the vietnamese ones that come with the fish sauce, magical taste. If the fish suace tastes a bit bland, you know the northern Chef made it, but otherwise real tasty! Great value for money!

Great food, excellent value for money. This along with Green Papaya down the road is my favourite Vietnamese in London. Incredible variety of dishes. I normally manage to nibble at at least 5 different species during a meal. Highly recommended are: Beef in betel leaves, the pan cakes, the shredded duck salad and the pork in soy sauce. But to be honest I have never had a bad dish here and that includes the chicken feet salad.

My favourite vietnamese restaurant in London. Great value, authentic, fresh and tasty. Try the flat rice rolls with pork, the beef cubes, their noodle soups.

I came back to London on Boxing day after a long drive from the North with my Dad, we were tired and hungry so decided to eat out. I assured him there were plenty of cheap restaurants to choose from, but it turned out most of them were closed for the Christmas break. Luckily Tre Viet was open, and packed full of hungry diners, we only just managed to get a table. Bamboo and paper lampshades hang down from the ceiling, adding an authentic touch to what otherwise could feel more like a canteen than a restaurant. We both ordered noodle soup, which arrived only after most of the people around us had been presented with their food. This was a little annoying as we’d ordered before them all, and I wouldn’t normally mind but we were both SO hungry. The waiter was apologetic and friendly but seemed very distracted and kept forgetting drinks orders and even took our change to another table. The food was pretty good, I’m sure I’ll go back. With the mains averaging at around £6 you have to remember you get what you pay for.

I attended the self-same party at Tre Viet as the lovely Katy and happily, drunkenly oblivious to the tofu/fish furore not two table places from where I was sat, had a wonderful time. Located on Mare Street — known to some I believe as Murder Mile and the site of Harriet Harman’s stab vest debacle — Tre Viet is a large restaurant just near London Fields serving some of the best Vietnamese I’ve had in London. Not being particularly ravenous a friend and I shared a number of starters including the aromatic crispy shredded duck pancakes and the vegetarian spring rolls. Yum, yum and yum again. The food is seriously tasty. Tre Viet’s invitation to BYO is brilliant. Perhaps this is how as a party of 30 we managed to get everyone’s bill in at around the cost of a Pizza Express salad. The future is most definitely Tre Viet.

I have seen the future and it is bring your own booze restaurants. I went to Tre Viet this weekend for my best friends birthday, she’s a popular lady and there were about thirty people for dinner. In normal circumstances, with so many people it usually ends in chaos and the bill comes to more than a months rent, there’s always someone that doesn’t pay or claims that they had a starter with water and therefore should be entitled to contribute a few coins and a smile. Not so at Tre Viet: the bill came to £10 each and not even the tightest of diners could quibble with that. It was slightly chaotic; we all arrived at different times and so did our food, some people got there first and received their food last but I wasn’t one of them so I’m not complaining. I had the sizzling lamb with chillies and lemon grass which was delicious and presented on a very fetching cow shaped hot plate. I was hungry so I also ate every ones leftovers, the vegetable spring rolls were the best find from my scavenger hunt. The one major flaw of the evening I thought was when my vegetarian friends tofu dish arrived and tasted pungently of fish. Quite reasonably she tried to return it but the waitress announced the dish was fit for vegetarian consumption. We countered that that was really not the point, the situation resulted in the waitress grabbing a fork to try for herself, she then concluded that it tasted ‘nice’ and tried to leave it in front of my horrified friend. Although this was quite possibly the worst example of customer service witnessed by any of us in quite a while, they did eventually remove the offending dish with apologies and more than anything it was a ‘so bad its hilarious’ kind of situation. I would definitely recommend this place, just don’t order the tofu if your not keen on fish.

Tre Viet is one of the many Vietnamese restaurants on Mare St. in Hackney. For me it is definitely one of the best. I think what sets it apart from the others is it ambiance. Unlike a lot of other Vietnamese restaurants in the area, Tre Viet Has taken the time to decorate the interior with care. The lighting is perfect, and the bamboo that hangs from the ceiling is overwhelming in a nice way. The decoration is busy, there is a lot of it, which I think gives it a cosy kind of feeling, and does not risk feeling like too much. The food is good, not exceptional, but very reasonably priced. For a starter I had the ‘soft shelled crab’. I have had this dish a number of times, both good and bad, they do it well at Tre Viet, with a decent amount of spice. For a main course I had ‘Beef with chilli and lemon grass’. One again, I have had this dish a good few times. The dish had a great flavour, which is very important, but I found the meat was scarce and was not of the best quality. Overall, I was satisfied with the food. I guess you have to remember that you get what you pay for, and you really do at Tre Viet with the average main course costing around 7 pounds. Unfortunately, the main courses came with an interval of a few minutes between the four dishes we ordered, the last one coming ten minutes after the first. It was forgivable, but if forgiveness in not in your nature then it might be a problem as they offered no compensation. The Restaurant is B.Y.O alcohol which is nice, and there is an off-licence conveniently situated across the road. It is open 7 days a week until about 10pm.
