Description

Specialties

The Residence Gallery is a commercial and conceptual contemporary fine art venue based in London, UK. Founded in 2005 by artist/curator Ingrid Z, the gallery has seen a great deal of transformation from its underground roots in an abandoned Victorian mental hospital in Whitechapel and covert operation in the Verger’s Cottage at St. Mary of Eton Church in Hackney Wick. Now situated at Victoria Park Road E9, it’s mission remains strong; to challenge convention and promote a movement of cultural progression through fine art.

The gallery exhibits a wide range of media in often immersive-installation and scenario styled exhibitions. Exceptional London artists who have featured over the past 10 years in the gallery and at its international art fair stands (Pulse Miami and London Art Fair) are the key focus of our 2015 programme. They include Daryl Brown, Liam Ryan, Robert Hawkins, Alexander Heaton and Ben Gooding. Other artists of importance for whom The Residence Gallery has exhibited and remains connected with include Rckay Rax, Darren Coffield, Tasman Richardson, Declan Rooney, Brad Phillips, Jonas Ranson and Mike Ballard.

History

Established in 2004.

The gallery’s history began a few years back as an idea for a palatial D.I.Y. museum in an abandoned Victorian mental hospital (squatted in Whitechapel, 2004 as the «Tate Post-Mortem»). It later unleashed itself as «The Residence» with over 100 exhibitions in a rented shop premises during 2005. This was followed up by its covert takeover of The Verger’s Cottage (St. Mary of Eton Church), haunted home to gallery Director/Artist Ingrid Z. Notice of demolition prompted the gallery to secure a permanent move to its much loved Victoria Park Road where it’s now at last rooted at no.229 for many years to come.
