This Victorian school building has been completely refurbished by award-winning architects, and in addition to some of the best dance/theatre rehearsal studios in the country, its Galleries, glazed courtyard, & two fully-serviced meeting rooms make an exciting and unusual setting for corporate hospitality, launches and the work of creative businesses. With daily specials and excellent value-for-money, visitors may also find themselves rubbing shoulders established performers or tomorrow’s stars who have been at work in the rehearsal studios. You’ll also be intrigued by the latest art installation in the Café, while the exhibitions in the Gallery present Jerwood Visual Arts — the best in contemporary painting, sculpture, drawing, photography and applied arts.

History

Established in 1998.

Jerwood Space is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, created to help professional performers & artists with workspace. Deriving income entirely from space hire & taking no public grants, we offer reduced cost space to those who merit support while commercial theatre pays the market rate. Occupying the site of the Orange Street School (1872 – 92), it was refurbished in 1998 (architects: Paxton Locher) to provide excellent & affordable rehearsal facilities for dance & theatre. The Gallery (once the school’s bike sheds) exhibits Jerwood Visual Arts which, with the Café & Glasshouse (architects: Satellite) offers a public facility for enjoyment & relaxation. Space is also available to the business sector for meetings & events. In 2007, the second floor (lost to bombing in 1940) was restored by architects Munkenbeck+ Partners to provide a magnificent suite of new studios & meeting rooms. As in 1998 this capital development was once again entirely funded by the Jerwood Foundation.

Brilliant space. Used rehearsal rooms for quite a few shows when I worked in London. Always such a pleasant place to work. And the café downstairs is great for tea breaks and lunch. Definitely recommend if you need a rehearsal space or even a place for lunch. Food is fresh and delicious.

As a charity who run events in London, we provisionally booked the Jerwood Space meeting rooms 8 and 9 by telephone. The following day a member of staff from the Jerwood called to demand a confirmation immediately in writing, despite the fact that I had told her we would have to confirm venue with the speaker and other staff members who were on annual leave (half term). Her rudeness and abruptness made me think twice about holding our events there if this is the customer service that our guests can expect to receive. Having lost the meeting space 3 weeks before the event, there is now a rush on to find another — something that no events organiser wants to happen.
Please be very, very wary about using this venue!

The Jerwood Space is relatively new to the arts scene, having only opened in October 2008. They offer a gallery space, events and meeting space and a rehearsal space, giving smaller independent artists and theatre groups the chance to work in a cheaper area and sometimes along side the bigger companies too.
It’s become a real hub of the arts scene. For this reason, it gets five stars from me as I love to see independent arts places like this popping up, especially as it’s so hard being an actor, artists or dancer in London or just someone wanting to start their own dance group of production. This place offers a good cheap alternative and connects people to the scene. I’ve had a few friends who have used the gallery space and one friend thinking of bringing her independent arts company here for the rehearsal space.
A brilliant place for burgeoning companies and people in the arts…

The Jerwood Space also has a rather nice café/restaurant. You order your grub from the counter, then go and sit in the conservatory which is very white and calm (and a little chilly in the winter). You can then keep an eye out for the various famous types who always seem to be using the rehearsal space (Ewan McGregor and Darius Danesh have been recent spots) or perhaps flirt with the handsome young (Italian?) waiter that my female colleagues have all taken a shine to.
Celebs and heart-throbs aside, the food is very tasty. It’s light and well-cooked and seems to tune in with the décor, and it doesn’t hit the wallet too hard.
In summary, this is a great place to slide in to in the middle of a leisurely walk through the always-fascinating Southwark.

The work of the five winners of the 2007 Jerwood Photography Prize is being exhibited at this smart space in Borough until December and is really worth a visit. They are all very talented recent graduates who have explored typically contemporary issues such as sexual exploitation, pollution and electronic waste in a sassy and sensitive manner. One very original and perceptive project stands out, it’s called «Puppet Love» and it’s a delicious peep into the quirky world of ventriloqy. Sure to fascinate. And it’s always nice to be fascinated.
