The Duke of Wellington

It’s a great place to catch a lunch beer and eat your Sainsbury’s meal deal in their beer garden. They don’t mind. If you do want hot food they do Pizza’s only. It’s a very cheap place for a drink which makes it great for a quick one.

Back alley pub. Not necessary for the tourists, but good place to stop for a pint.

I can’t honestly believe these 1 and 2 star reviews. I absolutely adore the duke of welly, or «wolfies» as it’s affectionately known by locals. I worked nearby for 4 years and it IS AN EAST END GEM! If you want an authentic weird, random east end pub, then wolfies is just right. The bright lighting, the darts, the naff carpets… it’s exactly what makes it so great. It also has a great outdoor space you can chill in. It doesn’t do food per se but the drinks are cheap. The guy who runs the place, Wolfie, is one of the best landlords I’ve come across, he’s friendly and amenable and just a bloody nice fella who always accomodates and gets to know local people and workers.
I would thoroughly recommend wolfies, unless you’re looking for a wanky, i’m the same as every other dick and harry, «east end» (but actually not east at all) wine bar. Trust me when I say, this is one my favourite places in London. There’s a reason why locals dig it, and it’s because it’s bally well awesome. Even when I brought friends here, once they got over the shock of the 80s décor, they’ve all had epic banana nights here since, with and without me.
Ok, rant over. Long live the duke!

Per above, yes, its one venue for the LIODA (London Insurance Darts) matches. Although you would be unlucky to hit a match as they are only held once every two weeks and run from @6pm to 9pm. If it coincides with a footy match then it can be a bit of a squeeze.
Not a fav of mine as there are so many better watering holes around. A quiet one it you want to watch the afternoon cricket though.
If you have food then the best thing is to put it in a bag and take it home for the neighbours dog.

cheap and local are good, but attempts to spruce up place with bad 80s-​90s hotel furniture/​décor, not so much. building itself speaks to much potential should owners choose to do place up right, but currently, the harsh (and too bright) lighting emphases all the wrong things. i went back, but only b/​c it was close by and maybe out of pity (rooting for the underdog).

This place looks bright and welcoming from the outside, particularly when torrential rain is falling from the sky. The metal music I heard as we walked in was unusual, but I thought a welcome change from the norm. There were 2 real ales on, even if they were predictable choices.
This is where it all went wrong. 1 ale smelt awfully of vinegar and could not in any way to aspire to the adjective drinkable and the other one while quaffable, did not look or taste like the advertised product. Very odd. Was it London pride gone funny or something else entirely? There was some kind of gathering in the pub which seemed to be based around playing darts and eating handfuls of greasy sausages.
Maybe 1 is a little harsh but I’d rather a pub to serve no real ale than to do it half behinded like this place.

If you were a small domestic flood, or maybe mildew and you wanted to find a new place to hang out, The Duke of Wellington should be high up on your list.
From the outside it looks quite charming in that nineteenth century pub way. The interior can only be decribed as decaying faux victorian 1970s cheap n’ shabby.

This pub is a favoured haunt of a friend of mine from New York that has lived in London for 7 years. By day he works in the financial sector, by night he seeks out the grottiest places in East London and pretends to like them.
The crowd here is a real mixture, a few locals, a few city workers, a few sorely disappointed people that stumbled in by accident thinking that it might be one of those hidden East End gems.
The beer is cheap, but the only real redeeming feature of the pub is the door, from which you can leave and go to any one of the many great places within a few minutes walk.
If by misfortune you find yourself here, leave and go to the Ten Bells or perhaps Dirty Dicks or any one of the hundreds of other nearby pubs and bars that are a thousand times better.
