The Conran Shop

I was going to write a long glowing review for The Conran Shop — the Conran living-​and-​lifestyle flagship smack dab on Fulham Road — but really it’s almost all succinctly stated in the following haiku:
Gorgeous, modern, cool.
Pricey. Might just buy a card.
One day, will buy more.
Unilocal note: would rank this 5 stars if it had affordable enough stuff to fill my flat with. That said: go, go, go, even just to look at things, and flip through books, and smell beautiful perfumes and stare with awe at light fixtures that are as beautiful as they are functional.

As Kristen C. mentioned this is Terence Conran’s shop, although one of his offspring Jasper will soon be taking the reigns. The shop is worth visiting at least for the building and window displays, and sells a lot of modern classic pieces — with a price tag to match — as well as many smaller accessories for the whole of your house. Everything is very much geared towards the wealthy local clientele, some of whom unfortunately have more money than sense — which is a bit of a shame given Mr Conran’s lasting impact on the British design world.

A really, really lovely home décor and furniture shop that makes a welcome change from Beigeville. The shop is always beautifully presented and has an eclectic and exciting mix of things. If you go for items in their Well Considered range you’ll end up with great value, beautifully designed pieces.

Contemporary but comfortable furniture all the way to elegant but practical dinnerware, reflects Terence Conran’s vision of easy modern living with exciting design. Not only are there gorgeous things to make your home a better place, but just walking through the store itself will give you a lifestyle makeover.

Jasper Conran’s flagship London store is housed in the 1930s Michelin building, which is shares with Bibendum, one of Conran’s most prestigious of his restaurant empire.
Conran’s eye for contemporary detail and tastes are ably demonstrated by a stroll through this store which sells everything from furniture to lighting to matches and kitchen gear. There are some strikingly modern designs like Philippe Starck’s dual tower Parrot speakers to retro TIMEX digital watches.
Being Chelsea, the prices reflect that but it’s still a fun stroll through even if you don’t to buy anything.

The Conran Shop are utterly incompetent. I placed an order online in November for a Christmas present, they stated at time of ordering 3 – 5 days for delivery. After 2 weeks I chased up the order and 3 days later received an email response asking if I wanted to cancel. I replied saying that I did not want to cancel but I expected some compensation for the wait e.g. a refund on the delivery charge. A) Conran Shop had already taken money from my credit card before dispatching the goods (which they never dispatched) B) they took another week to reply to my email C) they cancelled my order contrary to my request D) they did not even apologise.
I will never shop with them again and I urge anyone thinking of making a purchase with them to go elsewhere.

It takes a lot to get me excited about soft furnishings. Luckily Jasper Conran, the founder of Habitat, has a shop on the Fulham Road that does the trick. The exterior is the first thing that strikes you about the place. Housed in the 1930s Art Deco Michelin building, it must be one of the most beautiful buildings in London. It’s very like Habitat inside the shop, perhaps the difference being the Conran shop’s slightly more adventurous take on proceedings and, needless to say, price. One of my favourite sections is the framed pictures, where you can buy massive blown-​up Penguin Classics titles (just like those mugs), framed for £50. There is a huge range of products — funky lights and light fixtures, goose-​down duvets, classic Le Creuset kitchenware — all of it very high quality and guaranteed to catch your eye. The staff are similarly good at looking after the most casual of enquiries. Window displays are also worth looking after. A year or so ago, they were selling 100 Design Classics for the Home with everything from those tomato-​shaped ketchup holders to beautifully crafted authentic Moroccan tagines. Highly recommended for special gifts.

The furniture is sometimes pricey but there is a really good selection of modern and stylish pieces, with a strong design feel.
Conran also stocks some very desirable home accessories and housewares.
I bought a table and chairs in the store a while back and although the delivery was postponed, everything else went smoothly (they are living a happy life)
Staff is not always helpful however, which is why although I love the products in the store, I cant give it the maximum rating.
