Reasonable local. Nothing to write home about, though.

The food in here is absolutely delicious. They have quite big menu with great selection of tapas like starters/dishes and main courses. All nicely complimented by vast selection of craft beers and ales. The place might get bit noisy when the game is on… but it is nicely split to two sections: section with the TV(noisy part) and section without the TV on the other side of the bar were you can have nice and relaxing time:)

It has a log fire. I like log fires. Spicy cider great but tiny amount. Not the kind of place you’ll get your head kicked in. What’s not to like?

Pretty pub, but not-so-amazing food. Came here for burgers one Friday and mine came out 15 minutes before my husband’s. Not the greatest dining experience. Their brunch is okay, but nothing I wanted to come back for. Nice local with good beer selection, but not the best spot for food or atmosphere.

Apparently Lime & Sodas are free?! I came here on a Sunday afternoon for a little pick-me-up before cycling home. We spend the day exploring the Herne Hill Market, and this place was packed full of people enjoying an afternoon drink with friends or family. The place is comfy, had tons of space and a very friendly staff.

So this place is quite nice. Situated across the road from Herne Hill train station, it’s perfectly located for a quick beer on the way home from work. I had a pint if Brooklyn beer which was quite nice. I didn’t spend too long here but the experience I had was good and one which i would try again. It struck me as quite a nice family pub which was suitable for everyone!

Great traditional pub, good choice of various ales and the food is excellent, I’ve eaten here quite a few times and the menu always has something decent I’ve really enjoyed. Plus the bar snack option(3 for £10) is a good choice for finger food with friends. It can get very busy and can be hard to find a table which is a downside, but they do have a beer garden out the back. The atmosphere is very welcoming(I’m sat by their open fire now, enjoying a white ale), the staff are friendly, and the prices are reasonable. Even better is the fact that the station is opposite so getting home is a breeze. They have a small garden out the back, but I’ve never been there in warm weather to comment on it. Overall though its one of my favorite pubs in London, would thoroughly recommend.

Popped into the Commercial to grab some chow with a friend and her dog one lovely June evening. The first thing I noticed was that there a large queue at the bar, and only one barmaid. The pub advertized«Prix Fixe», 2 courses for £10, but we couldn’t see any Prix Fixe menu. Eventually we established that this menu was on the tillpoint only and she hadn’t had time to print it out. Therefore had to decide on the spot. I opted for soup(no further description was forthcoming) followed by a roasted butternut squash salad. The actual food was very very good. My companion’s hummous appeared to have been made on site; the salad was beautifully crafted, and presented, not to mention fine-tasting. Infinitely better than the usual mass produced rubbish. The fabric of the pub is pleasant as well, with bare boards and quality furniture. The clientele seemed tolerant of intermittent but piercing canine whining from under our table. I’d like to think they were short-staffed on that day, because I really enjoyed the food. 2 stars, because the long waits and lack of menu clarity did leave me exasperated.

Whilst this pub in the heart of Herne Hill is a good looking one and has a good selection of ales/lagers and ciders, the somwhat dim staff and the slowness of the food service lets it down. The manageress did give us a free pint because we waited 40 minutes for food on a rather quiet wednesday afternoon and I thank her for that. I think this is a nice pub to have a pint or two and the beer garden is quite the sun trap but I wouldn’t eat here again. For the price of the food there is a lot better value around every corner.

Really nice local pub, serving a great choice of ciders/beer/ale. Never eaten here, so can’t comment on that, but it’s cheaper than the Half Moon, and less child ridden than the Florence, and so is my pub of choice in Herne Hill.

Not a bad old pub, with great interiors(very dark, a great place to cuddle up to someone), and conveniently located 10 seconds across the road from Herne Hill station. It used to be a lot better before it was taken over by a big chain(I’m not so keen on the menu now), but the food is pretty decent for pub stuff, and the drinks are great. While I wouldn’t suggest you order a Bloody Mary(they seem incapable of mixing one there), they sell Fruli on tap and have a great selection of ales and beers. Sometimes it can attract dodgy characters though, and it’s not uncommon to see the odd drug deal happening here. Apparently the police are aware of the problems at the pub though, but it’s not a large issue. A nice place for a drink before going on to the many restaurants in the area. Great(small) outdoor area too.

I’ve had a few really good times here. It’s not in my area but is close to a few friends in the area. The fact that this pub is right across from Herne Hill Station is particularly noteworthy, enabling imbibers to drink up to the last minute before catching their catch. I’ve done it before. If you can find a seat(good luck!), you’ll find the setting particularly cosy. The pub has a couple of beautiful old wood burning fireplaces adding a nice, evocative touch. But, standing round the bar is perfectly fine here and the bartenders I’ve met have been friendly enough. They pull excellent pints too. The Commercial does an exceptional job bringing in an ever changing line up of beers(real ale enthusiasts won’t be disappointed). I’ve eaten here once or twice and was pleased with their standard fare(but high quality) pub grub. Bottom line is The Commercial has a lot going for it and blows away the nearest competition.

Set in the center of Herne Hill, the Commercial is a pub that delicately balances between the aura of the«old man’s pub» and something more modern an accessible. From experience I have often found this to be a risky move, yet the Commercial manages to pull it off successfully. The décor is warming and comfortable, and there is the option for food as well(unfortunately I chose not to sample the menu so I cannot pass judgment). At first I sat out in the beer garden, which was quite small and was slightly over crowded by some belligerent morons, but I felt safe in the knowledge that this isn’t the usual crowd to acquaint the commercial, so I let it slide. The commercial has a good selection of beers, including white beers if you so choose. Unfortunately the rum menu was just a tad on the scarce side, but you can’t win them all. A touch too pricey for my liking, but the service was extremely good, even suggesting what drinks I might like to try which is always a bonus. Being a week night there was quite a calm ambiance in the pub, but it didn’t fall into the cold category you can get with so many other place. I was generally quite satisfied with my time at the commercial, and would recommend that you visit if you so happen to be in the area.

By far the nicest take on a traditional pub. The Commercial is classy and stylish yet unpretentiously natural. I fail to see how anyone could dislike The Commercial, it has the sophistication of a lad back but tasteful bar with everything that you would expect from a pub, from draught beer to suspended glass racks and beer mats. The tradition of English pubs is one that I fully support, but if every British pub was more like The Commercial, then god would we have more style.

This wannabe gastro-pub is located right opposite Herne hill train station and is well placed to pop into for a pint or two whilst waiting for a connecting train into town. On the whole the ambience is a chilled one and the crowd themselves are faily relaxed. I have done lunch, evening drinks and sunday dinner in here and I have to say that it is quite a soul-less place that really has no charm about it. So whilst it is more than suitable a place to while away a short amount of time I wouldn’t say it was the most pleasant of places to spend your time. The staff seem to have a hard time understanding and making themselves understood so you might need to repeat your order a few times. I should warn you that they are honestly the most uniterested bunch I have ever come across. The Sunday roast is VILE and I wouldn’t recommend it but they do have a decent range of beer & lager on tap including my ever favourite; fruli and for that reason alone it surely deserves a star!

What was a rather standard and depressing South London railway pub has been given a full Mitchel and Butlers relaunch. The soft furnishings and wide range of continental beers is another impressive addition to their roster. The excellent in-house-music choices on our visit only added to our favorable impression. Very much in keeping with the gradual gentrification of Herne Hill. If you miss your train from Herne Hill. don‘t stand on the platform cursing your inability to run up stairs fast enough. Go for a light ale or lager in the Commercial.

This is a cool spot sat virtually plum opposite the exit for Herne Hill station. Decked out in dark woods inside, it wouldn’t be a bad place to take someone for a midweeker, but I’ve had some good friday nights here and some decent Sunday afternoon hangover nosh. The small triangular smoking area out the back has a large mirror on each side, which is always good for a reassuring how you doin’?, but perhaps a little disconcerting when hungover. I’ve always found the bar staff quick and friendly and there’s a big screen for rugby and a good atmosphere. If you still want more come closing, go boogie unashamedly in Escape next door.
