After a thursday night session at Corsica a few friends and I stopped by this kebab shop. Prices were fantastic, food came out promptly — ordered a chicken burger with chips(~4£ and seriously delicious). Food was great, speedy, guy(sonny?) seemed very nice. Other reviews are positive and I’m not sure why they were both 3 stars.

Elephant & Castle is by no means my stomping ground, so when I heard we were heading south for a club night I was a little sceptical. I kept my eyes open for those post-dance necessities and spotted Sonny’s Kebab and Chicken. I giggled to myself, appalled at the yellowed appearance and slightly disheveled signage, I even joked to Leon C. that we would end up unabashedly stuffing our faces later. Well, I shouldn’t have joked, it was the only place open when we headed on our journey back across the river. They say don’t judge a book by it’s cover, and in this case, don’t judge the food by it’s counter. My belly screamed for some greasy chips and to my surprise they were really good. The chips were piping hot and fried crispy. The sauce-lover that I am, must commend Sonny’s for their generous mayo and ketchup portions. My lightly liquored stomach thanks you for the hang-over free morning that followed, dreadful breath and all.

I continue my quest to enter dodgy looking eateries, so you, the Unilocalers of London can eat without fear of retching up your life story to the White Porcelain God. Sonny’s Kebabs & Chicken looks a little ropey as in fairness most kebab shops do. I ordered a large Doner Kebab, with chilli and garlic sauce. oh yes the ‘Death breathe’ combo, and chips smothered in tomato sauce and mayonnaise(Mmmm Laura N’s favourite.) Maybe it was the combination of being 3am in the morning and infused with a little alcohol, but the food tasted good. The meat was tasty, the chilli sauce didn’t incinerate my insides and the salad tasted fresh. Ok I’ll admit the pitta was a little wooden but I didn’t care. Sonny; you get the thumbs up.
