Shoreditch Grind

The cocktail here was delicious and the atmosphere of the shop was great. It was a fun place to hang out with friends after walking around the brick lane market. I had the Maiden London which I thought was a bit pricey but it was still good.

The coffee world is a small one. You could almost describe it as somewhat incestuous. If you speak to somebody in coffee chances are they’ll know somebody you know.
It’s also often known, unfortunately, for being wanky (for want of a better word). The thing is, more often than not, it really isn’t. You can chat to the barista behind the machine and ask questions about your coffee and they’d be more than happy to chat away. Then you get those places where you walk in and the weight of the judgement hits you before you’ve even reached the counter to order. One such place attuned to the latter is most definitely Shoreditch Grind. On a brief stopover in London my other half and I wanted to scope out some good coffee spots. The Grinds always come recommended so we figured we would stop in Shoreditch Grind and check it out.
Biggest mistake of my entire trip to Europe (and that includes a night I mixed vodka and red wine on an empty stomach whilst on a train…). I ordered 2 double espressos but I also really felt like a milky coffee. Being lactose intolerant I opted for a soy latte but, before ordering, I asked one barista — let’s call him curls — if their soy separated in the coffee. Curls said «sometimes but not really, we use bonsoy so it’s good milk». Winner! Milky coffee on the way — soy latte, no foam. Well, coffee arrives. Two single shot espressos and a separated soy latte with a good inch of foam on top. We drank the espressos rather than letting them know they weren’t what we had ordered. I then gave the latte a good stir and let it settle twice to see if it would be okay. No such luck, it was pretty dead so I took it over and asked if they could make it again, this time with no foam (like I had initially asked for) but maybe if they used only one shot it would be less likely to curdle; I won’t go into why but it’s an acid to milk thing, science and that. So as I head over to my seat the rambunctious barista with the «I haven’t had a shower in 5 days» grease and bad tattoos, we’ll call him Portly, starts shouting loudly for all to hear «WHO ORDERED A SOY LATTE?! WELL IT’S ALWAYS GOING TO SPLIT. WHAT, SHE WANTS ONE SHOT? WELL FINE. I’LL GIVE IT TO HER IN SEPARATE GLASSES AND SHE CAN MIX IT HERSELF HARHARHAR» Genuinely? I thought he was kidding. It was probably what he thought was an in joke to those in coffee regarding the recent Melbourne café that successfully broke the Internet by serving up a «deconstructed coffee». How wrong I was. Out comes a deconstructed coffee for me to make myself. Behind the bar Portly is still laughing at his hilarious stunt. Naturally, I walk up to the counter and request a refund. Curls let’s me politely know my coffee is on the way as Portly looks up and realises, sheepishly, that I wasn’t sitting outside like he had originally thought but in fact had heard everything he said. As I said I didn’t appreciate the way they had spoken about me and my coffee order, I was told I had «misheard». He then tried to make out like he had being doing me a favour by allowing me to make the drink myself, pretending like I couldn’t possibly have heard him laughing about how hilarious it would be to «just make her do it herself». No, no, it was just a «misunderstanding» to which I promptly replied «it wasn’t a misunderstanding at all, I heard what you said and it was you thinking you’re funny and just being a rude d*ck». Okay, calling him names wasn’t my finest moment but it was true… I then waited at the till for my refund as loud Mr Portly had gone sheepishly quiet but still shout-​whispered «kill me now» repetitively.
Thanks Shoreditch Grind for keeping up the «all baristas are pretentious wankers» image alive and kicking. I’ll just head over to Ozone coffee instead. (For those in the area, you make a swift body swerve around the Grind to the opposite side of the roundabout and its down an alley, only about 3 minutes away.)

I live nearby and would walk by every day thinking, what is this grungy, hipster place, without giving it further thought. As I started to get more into the Grind chain of cafes, I gave this place a try and have been coming back consistently ever since. I like it and it’s funky.
The only real downside is that it’s kind of small and the music is loud on the weekends.
Coffee is good. Not out of this world, but they make a good soy latte. Pastries and cakes are yummy and their menu is really good. The green smoothie is really tasty and the cacao pieces are yum!
I tried the granola smoothie bowl. I thought it would be like an Acai bowl, which it kinda is, but it’s not as good or naturally sweet. It’s filling though and a good portion. Always see people ordering eggs, or avocado toast on weekends, which I’ve never tried here.
Definitely worth a visit and it’s great for people watching!

Velvet cake rocks. So does the aperol spritz. And the coffee. And the pictures on the way to the bathroom. With a terrace and a cozy room it’s the perfect spot to do the Sunday afternoon transition from coffee to cocktail.

Trendy, trendy! This is the place to go if you want to mingle with whoever is mingling here.
I didn’t like it though as it was cramped, noisy and expensive! However the service was brisk and the coffee was incredible…

Shoreditch Grind is right off of the tube, so many points just for convenience sake.
Things we tried between 2 people:
— hot porridge (oatmeal) with coconut and fresh berries: warm, yummy, creamy, comforting, fur filling. Happiness in a bowl.
–smashed avocado+smoked salmon on toast: pretty solid. Loved the chili slicers. Tasted even better with a crack or black pepper + squeeze of lemon.
— banana bread with crème fraîche: liked that the bread was overly sweet. Warm and toasty, topped with honey and crème.
–fresh pressed red juice: consisted of apples + beetroot + blackberry + banana: really fresh, but a tad sweet for my liking.
My friend also really enjoyed their coffee.
We were so stuffed from our quick stop here. A great alternative if you want a delicious breakfast on the go. Would like to come back for more!

Great Espresso. Edgy Music. Lots of hipsters. Loyalty card FTW.

Only been for drinks, but this coffeehouse/​bar hybrid has strong drinks in a trendy atmosphere. When crowded and rainy, finding a seat is nearly impossible and it’s not exactly a comfortable place to stand about. Last time they didn’t have either of the 2 drinks I first ordered, and considering the limited scope of the drink menu this was surprising, but what I eventually got was good. Would surely go again.

Who doesn’t love a cold brew?! They are especially flavoursome here, and served from a device which looks suspiciously like a beer pump, so I can make believe it’s Friday as I stumble, misty eyed, to work on a Monday morning. The service is friendly and quick, and the space this place occupies is nice and bright, and never really feels overcrowded. I have yet to try the cocktails here, but I’m going to wager the service/​atmosphere is better than it is at London Grind, just because of its location. The flat white Russian is calling me and I must heed that. One day, my love…
Can we talk about the stairs? At a staggering 5’3″ and 60kg, I’m not the biggest person in the world, but I had to actually climb back down the stairs, as I was going up them, because someone was coming down them and trying to manœuvre around each other would have surely seen us both plummet to our deaths. Why are they so narrow? Why are they so steep? I only wanted to use the bathroom, but as the clouds disappeared and I grew light headed as I ascended, I started to see images of golden eggs and a giant. Did I pay for my coffee with magic beans? Okay, I’m exaggerating, but that staircase is really steep and narrow.
The prices are really reasonable here and everything is served minus a heavy side of hipster pretension; something plenty of other coffee shops in this area could learn from — I want my coffee without fear of your moustache wax dripping into it, and put some damn socks on. Come for the cold brews, stay for the possibly fatal fall down the stairs.

You know, I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad experience here — and it’s definitely somewhere I’ve been regularly coming for a number of years!
Ok so mainly I get takeaway as I’m usually on the go, but the times when I’m in here for meets, to work or people watch have always been quality. Considering it’s like a little hut (think ex-​cinema) it does the job and must be like a goldmine with all the people who pop here once hopping off the train.
A great little place, love it!

I really like Shoreditch Grind, so much so it’s pretty much where I always go for coffee in the area. I like that there is a buzz, the music is louder than your typical coffee shop and the whole place just has a nice energy. Great for people watching if you sit along the window too.
I’ve always been pleased with the coffee here, having tried a few single origins that they serve as standard in black coffee (which is great). This week I tried the food and was perfectly satisfied by my smashed avocado and poached eggs on toast. If the weather was different i would feel like I was back in Australia.
Must come for some espresso martinis one night

Me gustó mucho el Shoreditch Grind, la verdad. Un sitio molón en Old Street, un café muy rico, unos desayunos contundentes y un servicio bastante correcto. Yo pedí un latte, y la verdad es que lo tuvieron preparado en seguida. Además de eso me pedí un bagel de salmón (por aquello de desayunar fuerte) y lo cierto es que estaba espectacular.
Lo que sí que me pareció es que tiene la música demasiado alta para según qué horas de la mañana. Llegar a las ocho de la mañana y que eso parezca un club a media noche, me parece un tanto exagerado. Es verdad que el sitio es muy molón, bonito, con mucho espacio y que el servicio es majísimo, pero a los cinco minutos de estar ahí prácticamente me retumbaba la cabeza.

Un muy buen Flat White con hielo en este café que tiene toques entre berlinenses y neoyorkinos. El acento de una de las chicas de la barra me gustó mucho –era como del de Amy Winehouse, como muy de la clase trabajadora que todos somos, muy nuestro pero en inglés. La música alta quizá un pelín demasiado considerando que eran las 8’30 de la mañana un día y las 8’00 el siguiente. La decoración a caballo entre lo industrial y el reciclaje. Me gustó.

Great location, lovely place, great coffee. What else?
I love this grind. I went there out of curiosity as I used to walk down the place very often but never stopped by. And the least I can say is… I did well finally stopping by, especially on a (very rare) lovely sunny day in London. Perfect spot for a casual meeting.
My friend had some tea, I had my classic Iced Coffee of «hot» days. She liked her tea, nothing special. I did really love my coffee. Not the best I had in London for sure, but it was very good and refreshing. We sat at the back terrace, a truly amazing spot for this location. A lovely time, for a very decent price. I was honestly «expecting» it to be more expensive given the location, so the bill was a bit of a surprise. A pleasant one, indeed.
If you enjoy the hecticness of Old Street and hang out around Shoreditch, give this grind a try. Good coffee, lovely baristas and waitresses. Actually, very lovely waitresses. I most definitely will go there again for a coffee break in the area!

This was actually the first of the Grinds that I visited and while I now prefer the Soho branch this coffee house is still really good. The coffee itself is great, the snacks and treats are lovely and in the evening they do a really nice job of turning it into a low-​lit cocktail bar atmosphere. The espresso martinis are not to be messed with but are very delicious.

I suppose it depends on what you choose your coffee shop on, but the Shoreditch Grind is not a place to relax at all. I enter, go to the bar and I couldn’t hear the barista over the music at all.
I sat down on one of the most uncomfortable stools ever, a poorly made screw contraption that was small, wobbly and hard edged. The music then got even louder, with everyone screaming to talk to each other, I gave up on my newspaper. And wrote this review.
Tldr: Too loud, get coffee to go, or come with mates you don’t really like talking too, and bring a cushion.

During my visit in London, my friend suggested I visit the Silicon Roundabout seeing as I went to university near California’s Silicon Valley. I was wandering around until I stumbled upon Shoreditch Grind and remembered it was on a list of top coffee shops to try; so I decided to pop in.
I ordered a Mocha and eggs with avocado on sourdough toast. The man who took my order seemed indifferent, so I can’t comment on friendly service. There seems to be 4 – 5 people behind the bar, but 2 pulling shots of espresso.
While I was waiting for my order to arrive, a few thing stuck out to me:
— Non-​working Wi-​Fi.
— Complaints about the outlets not working, however, I cannot attest to this as I didn’t need to charge anything.
— Uncomfortable seats along the windows.
— Indifferent customer service.
I would understand popping in here for a cup of coffee before heading off to work; however, the experience here is nothing spectacular, so it’s not somewhere I would go out of my way for.
If you are a coffee enthusiast, stop by and try their shots, but otherwise, I’d move along.

In the Old Street roundabout you will find Shoreditch Grind, a small coffee shop with a lot of originality. The coffee is good, while the limited selection of baked goods is very reasonable too.

After reading and hearing so much about Shoreditch Grind, I came twice with high expectations. Probably a mistake…
The atmosphere IS really cool and hip. I love the design of the interior, so I was pretty excited as I approached the barista.
The two or three staff who served us gave us snooty attitudes, making us feel like we were completely uncool or just not good enough for their place. (OMG, it’s not even an independent shop!!) So, though we wanted to have a treat, the way they were glaring at us while we were trying to decide made us so uncomfortable we didn’t order anything to eat. Husband just ordered a flat white and I ordered a mocha because I wanted chocolate.
When our coffees came, we tried each other’s drinks and both thought that, on the whole, the drinks were too milky. Of course, I’m one who likes her coffees with a big kick, so maybe I’m just not a big fan of the beans they’re using. My second time (flat white) ended with the same conclusion, though, so, hey, it’s just not for me.
HOWEVER, their cocktails do sound very interesting… I’ll be back to try those, but I’m not sure if I’ll be back too soon for the coffee.

Shoreditch Grind is one of my top 3 coffees in London. Top 5? Solidly top 5.
So, it’s pretty hard to miss if you surface above ground around Old Street; I think it’s really strikingly beautiful, actually, with «Shoreditch Grind» splashed across a marquee and the surrounding brick painting black.
Inside — as several Unilocalers have pointed out — acoustics make it seem like A REALLY FRANTIC SPEEDDATING EVENT. Except all those speed daters are on Macs, powering up their Tweetdecks. Not hating, just saying that today I popped in mid-​morning (a weekday) and it felt like it was a social media manager networking event (I’m pretty sure it wasn’t).
Anywho: quite a few spaces to work downstairs (communal tables, window-​bar), bathrooms upstairs with two weird bar seats (prime…erm…bathroom proximity I guess?), but I’ve never stayed around to work at Shoreditch Grind because it’s kinda frenetic. In a generally good way. I think the staff are always super friendly and try really hard to remember my name (today — «what’s your name again? Ah, Alice!» — totally great try). And just generally: 2.70 for a larger-​sized totally delicious flat white. And lime and orange water in jugs by the side. And mega-​carby-​delicious sandwiches. (Other things look nice, too — holla, portuguese custard tarts! — but I can’t vouch for them from experience)
Unilocal note: they have a loyalty /​membership card system in place. 1 point per coffee; free coffee when you get to 10 (if I remember details correctly).

Adresse où l’on peut boire un expresso italien donc serré mais avec un goût formidable pour 2£. Vous pouvez ainsi déjeuner sur le pouce d’une salade ou d’un sandwich. Le cadre est sympathique tables dehors dans le quartier old street.

Desde que me mudei para esta área da cidade queria vir ao Shoreditch Grind. A fachada é muito legal e sempre via muitas pessoas lá dentro, então parecia uma boa idéia.
Era uma tarde de inverno e fazia –3º, de verdade! Eu e uma amiga entramos e pedimos um chocolate quente, os dois baristas não foram muito simpáticos e falaram que teriam que servir a gente em um copo de plástico e que nós não poderiamos tomar a bebida lá porque eles tinham um evento fechado programado para 3h depois do horário que estávamos lá.
1– Quem demora TRÊS horas para beber um chocolate?
2– Haviam outras pessoas sentadas no lugar, porque a gente também não podia.
A desculpa do moço foi que eles não teriam tempo para lavar a louça de todo mundo e por isso se nós não estávamos felizes poderíamos ir embora e não beber nada. Achei bem mal educado, mas decidi pedir meu chocolate «to go» e beber num jardim que tem perto.
Depois deste episódio não voltei ao lugar mas sinto que deveria dar outra chance, afinal o chocolate em si estava muito gostoso.
