A wonderful bookshop, essential for actors, French’s was originally founded in 1854 by Thomas Lacy in the Strand where he published plays. In 1873 it was bought by Samuel French, Lacy’s partner, an American, & moved to Southampton Street, Holborn, & in 1983 to its present site, appropriately off Fitzroy Square, where his son continued the business. They publish play scripts for amateur performance; sell books on the live theatre not ballet, film or opera & deal in performing rights. They also sell cards & posters of old plays
