Royal London Hospital

The staff who work in the Beareavemet Office were very sensitive and expressed their condolences’. Their were helpful in giving advice on what to do next in the case of arranging a funeral which we had never done before.
We needed to find the ward in which the deceased was on, due to a little confusion they cound not find the patient information but found it in the end which was very befiecial to us.
To go to the Mortuary you had to book an appointment, which we did over the phone. The guy who worked at the Mortuary told us to wait a bit while he got the deceased ready for us to view. You go into a small room were your decesesed is laid peacefully in a robe. Outside of this room, is two chairs and a small table laid with leaflets on information funeral arrangements and charities that help with the cost, also a box of tissues.
If you needed to come again to visit you just book an appointment through the Breavemet Office.
If I come here again, I hope it’s for a birth of a child.

Wow. 5-​stars for an A&E! Yes!
I was not terribly excited at 7pm to be on the phone with 111. I was even less excited when the instruction was «visit A&E within an hour.» (side note — this was regarding my son, and he was not gravely injured, but in some pain). I was, of course, worried about him — but secretly loathing having to make a trip to A&E and not knowing how long we might be detained as the young lad got fixed up.
Needless worry! RLH has a separate Children’s A&E, and within minutes we were seen by a nurse, who easily popped his «misplaced» elbow back into place. Back in business! We were instructed to let him play for a few minutes in the waiting area (and it’s nice! plenty of toys, books and activities to keep the little ones busy) — and after a few she came out, deemed him fit to go back home, and off we went.
*This was our first visit to A&E, but I am sure it is not the last given his propensity for danger. It is really nice to know that Royal London Hospital is relatively close and very professionally run and staffed, specifically for kids.
Also, having never visited an A&E outside of the USA — it was nice to NOT be bogged down with endless forms and then charged $ 1000 for the pleasure. Go England on this one!

I was in the Royal London last month for just over a week. Lucky enough to be in the new building. I would have found the experience depressing in the old building, but the new one is magnificent and so are the staff, at all levels, especially on the AAU ward. They couldn’t do enough to make sure you were comfortable and well looked after and not in distress. The food was good too and most staff didn’t nanny me and prevent me from going down to the small but adequate restaurant on the 5^th floor for one of the best cooked breakfasts in town and one of the few places in the building with reasonable air conditioning.
Speaking of which, a big criticism is the air conditioning which didn’t seem to be working properly. I know it’s a new building and there are bound to be teething problems, but this NEEDS TO BE SORTED. The heat (as it built up throughout the day) became very difficult at night when you were supposed to be trying to get some healthy, restoring sleep. The conditions don’t help patient recovery times and this does not make economic sense, which is why I say it needs to be sorted as a priority.
And besides, it’s not pleasant for the staff who work there. A sick building leads to sick staff! They are fantastic and deserve the best.

Great hospital, toilets are clean, wards are refreshing and so is the views right from your hospital bed window, the doctors/​nurses are nice to talk to and communicate with.

Being as I am hardly ever ill, I never once thought I’d be able to review a hospital, let alone an A&E department. Looking at the reviews of the main hospital, it looks like I escaped a rather lucky fate — especially as I went in on a Friday evening.
The incredibly polite and efficient ambulance men cheerfully told me I was lucky being admitted at 6.30, as if I’d rocked up at 11 I’d have been surrounded with piss-​heads (my words, not theirs, obv).
The A&E doctors and nurses were, again, incredibly polite and courteous. Clearly I’ve been watching way too much Greys Anatomy, as I was rather surprised that none of my team had romantic strops over my ECG, or raised eyebrows in X-​ray.
(Oh God. While we’re on the subject of X-​ray, huge apologies to the poor technician whose studio I was sick in. I managed to find the one X-​Ray tech in the world who really can’t stand the sight of people vomiting. I’ve never apologised so much in my life, he looked really traumatised!)
The clinical fellow who later did my test results and whacked me on a drip was also great. All this time, the A&E and X-​ray areas looked really clean and tidy.
The only downside was when I was put in a corridor, on a bed, with my drip for half an hour to wait for the fluids to go in. This was the only time I wished I was minted enough to go private, but only because for some reason, lying on a trolley with a needle on my arm freaked the bejeezus out of me. Mercifully, I went to sleep shortly after. Poor boyfriend who came with me spent the next 30 minutes counting how many hospital supplies there were.
The clinical fellow, who really didn’t have to do this being as she was so important, very kindly saw that I was faint after the needle came out and I starting gushing rosewater under my gauze, and got me a cup of tea and a little packet of Hobnobs. I hadn’t tasted anything that good in ages.
Well done and thank you so much to all at the ambulance service, A&E and X-​ray. The staff did so much to make me reassured and comfortable, and I really, really appreciate it.

I have been a patient of The Royal London for around 6 – 7 years. Yes it not always the cleanest hospital, which I believe is not helped by it being a ‘Listed Building’.
The staff of this Hospital are absolutely fantastic, I feel I owe my life to them. I was fortunate to have a ‘Renal Transplant’ in late 2009.
I have been asked if I would like to have my regular checks at a local hospital, as I live more than 60 miles from London. I would rather, have the sometimes more than a 3 hour journey to the hospital. I have complete and utter confidence of the staff that ‘LOOK AFTER ME’
When they move to the new hospital the STAFF will get a building that is suitable for the fantastic work they do! We should all be grateful that we have such a system as the NHS,

This is a dirty and badly run hospital. My boy (aged 3) stayed here recently for some 10 days. The room was filthy, There was a hole in the floor in the ground floor corridor, the lifts were regularly out of order, and when they worked, visitors were often jostling alongside patients entering and leaving theatre. I could go on but there is not enough space.
I asked staff how this could be possible in one of the world’s richest cities in the 21^st century. «Oh we’re moving into the new building at the back soon», was the reply. But no-​on seems to know when. I asked about the dirt. «Well, it’s a very busy public building» they said. But so are schools, hotels, and any number of other, large public buildings, which are cleaner and where people’s immune systems are not compromised.
But staff were great, they clearly deserve better. But be guided by the external appearance on the ground floor — cracked windows, rubbish strewn around, a general run down appearance.
The other reviews here praising the place must have been published by the hospital managers or the myopic, or both.
Don’t go there unless you’re well or can avoid it. MRSA anyone?

A well located Hospital just opposite the tube station. Parking is a major issue so if visiting family I recommend using public transport. It quite basic but is it located in quite a deprived area of London. The staff seem quite off handed but probably just over worked. I felt like cleaning up whilst visiting a family member but gave them some Dettol wipes which I bought for them from the nearby Sainsbury’s.

I did a placement here recently as a student nurse and I was really impressed by the cleanliness, the attitude of most of the staff, the facilities and the building itself– I think it still looks beautiful from the outside. They’re now building a brand new hospital just behind the current one which looks totally alien and out of keeping with the local area, but apparently it is needed to improve facilities and capacity. The Royal London is also home to the Virgin air ambulance service and those suffering from trauma injuries come to the hospital to be treated. It also has the second largest children’s hospital in London and offers some specialised services to people from all over the UK.

The Royal London is on Whitechapel Road, opposite the tube station and the market. The main building is Georgian, and has an impressive foyer, containing a war memorial and the old hospital bell (made up the road at the bell foundry). There is also a small shop which sells gifts and books in aid of the hospital. Carry on outside to the rear of the building and you will find what remains of the hospital garden, now very developed, but still home for a unique statue of Queen Alexandra, patron of the hospital, who famously visited John Merrick, the Elephant man, whist he lived in the hospital. He’s still there as his remains are on display in the medical school, right of the statue, but not to the public. However there is plenty to see in the hospital museum across the road.
To the rear of the old hospital is the vast building site of the new hospital, vast towers that have replaced the quaint east end backstreets.
The out-​patients has a nice coffee shop, but absolutely no-​where to park so not for a casual visit. The accident and emergency department is well known for its helicopter landing pad on the roof.

A TRIBUTE
I once died here.
Thanks to ever modernising technology and knowledge, I’m sort of OK now.
This hospital has one of the most advanced neurology departments in the country. It has a helicopter pad so that accident victims can be treated as soon as possible. This is really vital when there is a brain injury or damage to the spinal chord.
The hospital is quite prominent in Whitechapel Road, and extends back a vast distance. It not only serves the local community but patients are referred from all over the country. The majority of the building is Victorian, but it seems to be continually being extended and improved.
The Intensive Care Department is second to none. If one is conscious at least some of the time, one can appreciate the incredible attention to detail in it’s design, and the care and expertise of it’s staff.
I have a lot to thank this hospital for, and though my review is not terribly detailed, it is heartfelt.
A great place to be if you’re a bit crook.
