I recently moved to New Malden in the last year, and although I’m ecstatic at the number of Korean /Asian restaurants on offer here, I’m relieved I can count on Royal Gurkha for my Indian fix. They won’t wow you with any trendy ideas(thank goodness); white table cloths and proper attentive but friendly service the appreciated norm. and the food is great. Spiced just right, not oily, lots of dishes each with their signature charm, priced fairly. We love the Gurkhali Lamb, tender meat on the hot side but so tasty, and no potatoes to get in the way like a Vindaloo. All the other staples are there for you. All in all, a great, dependable, satisfying spot.

I have visited this Nepalese /Indian restaurant 3 times in the past month, and it has not failed to impress. There may however be a bit of a shock in store for some customers, as both Gurkhali Lamb and Gurkha Riffle are both described as ‘hot’, this isn’t a problem for me as I enjoy my food spicy+. The Ghurkha Riffle is a stir fried chicken dish served with a wonderful sticky sweet and sour sauce, but it does make most other restaurants Vindaloo seem quite mild by comparison, so be warned. Gurkhali Lamb is milder and is a very tasty dish, with crispy green peppers that are not cooked to a mush. For those with a less robust palate Royal Gurkha Chicken is a good choice and the old favourite of chicken tikka massala, which I normally dislike, was really quite pleasant and not sweet and sickly when I tasted my friend’s meal. If you have problems with chilli heat then ask the waiters and they will guide you. The portions are generous, the staff are attentive and helpful and the Kurkhuri lager is a very good alternative to Cobra or Kingfisher, albeit not cheap. There is currently — March 2011 — a 20% discount offered for eat in and also £10 meals Tuesday and Sunday, which makes it exceptional value.
