Regent Street Cinema

This cinema has a long history. It was the first place to show a film in the UK, the Lumiere brothers’ «Cinematographe», which toured the world in 1896.
Before the days of TV, the cinema would show newsreels during World War Two, bringing news to Londoners whose loved ones were away fighting in the war.
Owned by the University of Westminster, right next to the university near Oxford Circus. A 119 year old building, it was used by the university as lectures hall for the past 30 years, and has recently been rebuilt in an art-​deco style and re-​opened to the public showing independent and art house films, a place for film events, lectures and workshops.
More suited to lectures, the seating is not that comfortable to watch a film, but the bar area is nice and spacious with a great selection of drinks around the world, to meet before or after a film.
