I live in Notting Hill and on the lookout for a good, friendly staffed, un-posh and reasonably priced gym. Well, this is it. The gym has good lighting, even though there are no outside windows. Music is not too loud, equipment is up to date, and there are tons of classes to attend. Towels are good and can be rented for a quid. Clientèle is generally good too. Remember to bring a padlock for the lock. It is located under the westway and most accessible from Ladbroke Grove. Did I say that the staff is great? I love the people working there.

As I can only compare this to American gyms to which I’ve belonged, this place is on the lower end of fitness clubs I’ve been to. Though some of the stationary equipment is new and some of the free weights, most are old and outdated — like the facility itself. However, the people here are very friendly. On a side note, be prepared for a smelly environment. There’s a serious lack of deoderant use by the patrons of this gym.

This fitness club has retained its community feel alongside the masses of corporate, characterless gyms throughout London. They have a great weight resistance area and separate free weights section that is well provisioned for body builders. The main focus of this centre though is the classes. They have a full time selection of classes ranging from martial arts to belly dancing. With a selection of memberships aimed at giving the customer what they want, this makes you feel like a person not just a number. Portobello fitness club is a gem.

If you are in need of therapy I think this is a really good centre to visit. I like it because it is a lot cosier then some of the central London salons who offer expensive treatments but the service is awful. If I am going for a body treatment I like to think that I am going to get on well with my therapist, because I am curious and like to ask questions and a lot of the theraputic treatments can be long-term. This particular establishment has been going for several years and the owner Claire prides herself on offering ‘home from home treatments’. Don’t be misled there are many treatments on offer and all of them are delivered with attentive care and unobstrusive attention. Well worth checking out if you feel nervous about any time of therapy or body treatment.

Portobello Green(which is situation inbetween Ladbroke Grove and Portobello Rd., underneath the Westway) is one of my favourite health and fitness centres in West London. When you join PGFC, you not only gain access to this centre, but also the a wide range of facilities across a network of health clubs that PGFC is a part of. Facilities in PGFC include a free weights room, cardio studio(with running machines, bikes and step machines) and a machine weights room(with mats and balls for exercises on the floor e. g press ups or stomach crunches). There’s an exercise studio for a variety of classes from street dance to spinning. Also there are 2 sets of baddington and squash courts. The male and female changing rooms have both sauna and steam rooms. The great thing about Portobello Green, which far overrides all the great facilities is actually the atmosphere. There’s a sense of community and friendliness within this small members club, which makes your gym outing a sociable one as well as a healthy one
