I came here to meet up with a friend for a quick catch up and it is a good pub. Good location from oxford street and during the day is not so busy but not so quiet. Evenings tends to get so busy you can’t move.

My usual start off spot, the staff are swift, the drinks are reasonably priced and the vibe is vibrant. Soon as I enter the door, pint of the wife beater and chase that with a triple bushmill. Minus 1 star because they ran out so had to settle for Captain Jack D.

This pub has it’s advantages and disadvantages. I find it hard to 2 star it as I came here with a friend of mine who was blind and the staff were totally non-patronizing and welcoming. It’s a large atmosphereless pub with standard pre-packaged menu of microwaved or fried selections. On the weekend it becomes a little bit of a meat market without any of the class of the other bars in the surrounding area. The Old Explorer is painfully average… and this is a painfully average review!

Like Alice, I’m lost in wonderland. Well remove the wonderland bit. I’m lost… lost for words. I use to go there regularly on a Friday night(DJ night) and the odd occasional evenings(2 years ago). One day, I took a trip to The Old Explorer and in my opinion the poor pally has lost it’s unique edge *tear*. The ‘after work let’s get our fro out and have fun’ appeal has died. It use to be a place where people could get together straight after work, still in their uniforms and dance the night away and not having to worry about their surroundings. You can sense the presence of unity in there. Nowadays it’s all about forcing cupid to shoot its arrows left, right and centre and then some! Explorer does have it’s good points. It’s good to go there during the day time or in the afternoon and I do enjoy their karaōke nights(Weds eve). The prices on the drinks are cheap, the food is reasonable and the toilets are amazing!

Ahhh… the Old Explorer. My hubby took me here on our first drinks date and it became«our» pub. I used to attend school a few streets away and his work place was around the corner so we would meet for lunch and after work/school pints/drinks with friends here quite often. It’s a traditional British pub so you can’t go wrong with the usual fare… fish & chips, Sheperd’s Pie, etc. My personal fave is the scampi & chips.

Situated almost opposite The London College of Fashion, The Old Explorer couldn’t be any less ‘fashiony’ if it tried. This tradional pub stands out on the corner with its imposing gold letters against the green background. With its plasma screens, karoke nights and carpeted downstairs area– The Old Explorer is nothing like neighbouring gastro pub The Phoenix or über chic Match Bar. Extremely popular with tourists wanting to experience a ‘real’ British pub, nearby retail staff and shoppers resting their feet– this pub always seems to be busy. I first stepped inside The Old Explorer by default because my usual Fridat night drinking vene Match Bar was really packed. The neaby Phoenix was also rammed with drinkers. We were forced to sit downstairs because we were not prepared to wait more than 10 minutes at the upstairs bar. Well, I’m glad we did venture into The Old Explorer because that night I met my fiancé. I’drinking at ve now returned to much more stylish establishments but The Old Exolorer will always be special to me.
