I would rate this place better if the bartenders weren’t rude! But good food and a fun lovely atmosphere.

Very crowded on a Saturday evening. Okay food– fish and chips. Sticky toffee pudding was very fruity and all together too small. Well priced. Aspall ftw!

Very nice pub — always busy but quick service and reliably good food with very reasonable prices. We went twice and were happy both times.

My daughter and I are visiting from the U.S. and I wanted fish and chips. It was different from what we are used to as you order at the bar and then go to your table. It didn’t seem like a ‘order at the counter’ type of restaurant and the waiter actually took the order of a table sitting next to us a bit later. Confusing. Anyway the fish and chips were good. The chips stole the show… as far as the fish goes, it was good but I have had just as good in the U.S. Not sure what I was expecting but when you advertise that you have the best fish and chips in London I had expected something a little more noteworthy. I had never had mushy peas before and those were very tasty. My daughter ordered the Ceasar Salad with bacon and avocado… one of the best Ceasars I have ever had. I would definitely go back to this restaurant. The service was lacking as I had to go to the bar to get refills on water but after having to order my own food I kind of expected that.

Good stop for lunch. We ordered the bangers and mash and goat/vegetable baguette. Both were very good along with local beers. Friendly service and not too crowded in the late afternoon.

Best fish and chips in all of London! at least so they claim. and actually the food, drinks, service, etc were all great. For me, a key characteristic distinguishing a good from a bad pub is the condition of the male toilets at 9pm on a Friday evening. and this pub passed this test easily, thanks too both civilised guests and attentive staff.

Nice English pub located close to covent garden This particular pub has plenty of seating but not much standing space. It can get quite busy so beware the waiting for a table to come available may take a little patience. Usual range of beers and ales on tap and bottled. Great food, one of the tastiest fish finger sandwiches I have ever had and chips can be served in a handful or a portion so you don’t have to worry about being served a field of potatoes when you order chips. Not an overly noisy pub so table conversation can happen without complete loss of voice Excellent location

Monopoly Pub Crawl — Stop #18 — Bow Street(Orange) For our first of the orange color group, we selected the Marquess of Anglesey. This place has a posh interior to match the posh name and a wide selection of cask ales to back it up. The downside is that this pub tends to be über packed with tourist, lost Londoners, and everything under the sun. There is plenty of place outside if you fancy braving the chill or have a suitable alcohol jacket to make such worries irrelevant. The bar staff is friendly and does an admirable job keeping the crowd watered and they even managed to find time to sign our board. I hear they have a decent food menu but of course this was not the time to indulge. It’s a good place to keep in mind but I’ll likely find my pub fix away from central London if I can help it!

Its a nice cosy Youngs pub in Covent Garden ideal when you need warming up before you head home. the décor is of historic covent garden as this pub has a long history. check out the wonderful image of covent garden photographed in its hey day in the 1920s. The beers are good but don’t expect the food to be as good as other gastro pubs, its ok but nothing amazing. Toilets here a bit hit and miss for cleanliness.

Better than expected meal in this pub over lunch today. The upstairs restaurant bit is fairly pleasant with views over the covent garden tourists. Fish and chips was well done for the price

Nipped in here for a quick pint with a friend Pint was OK, location was fine, it’s a Youngs pub so you know pretty much what you will be getting before you step in. Staff are too busy really to chat, but seem to know what they are doing.

Really enjoyed this pub. Covent gardens was as full as ever so we decided to try something new. Food was great and the beer flowed a bit to freely :) One small negative the price you pay. But then again you are in London.

The first impression I got as I walked in was that it is a bar rather than a pub because of the funky interior design. However, there are no cocktails on the menu, so definitely a pub(which was confirmed by the fact that there was no soap in the bathroom). A Rekorderlig cider is £4.95 which is crazy, moreover they tried to give me Kopparberg instead.

A pubbish haiku: Lots of pubs have ale. Not much else to report on. Many Shrek-ers here.

This is a busy and fun pub, a cut above most of what you’ll find in the vicinity. The interior has been nicely updated, to retain the lovely and ancient woodworks while adding nicely textured wallpapers, artwork and trim — very soothing. I suppose you could call it upscale, but the prices are reasonable, the ales are properly served and cared for, and the menu still features great pub standards like fish n chips, and bangers n mash. There is always a nice, fun crowd here, without being jammed in like sardines and overflowing into the street. For a quiet, sit-down meal, the Marquess features a Bistro upstairs. The service is friendly and prompt, and whether alone or with friends, you’re always welcomed. Highly recommended — it is a stand-out in this area of London.

A. F’n packed B. The first time I’ve seen people just standing around outside a bar drinking and mingling without having to be at a table(US bars are annoying in this respect) C. Barbeque! D. Cask ales! E. Smoking bartenders F. Nice décor, fits in with the area I will hit again, and drink standing outside.

Really good brocolli and stilton soup! The wedges are delicious but not very plentiful. They could double the number of wedges they put on the plate, then I’d be a bit happier. Tasty coffee, good sized portions(except for the wedges of course), nice pints, yummy food.

Decent enough pub with the right ratio of seats and stools to standing area. It’s a Young’s pub so plenty of Young’s stuff on tap. I was on the white wine which was a bit yuk. The bar staff were sarcastic, bored, rude and impatient. We also got asked to stand outside as one of our party had a baby. We were quite proud of the little fella — a couple of months old and kicked out of his first pub! This did mean we got to sample the lovely views of the back of the Royal Opera House and some roadworks. There is plenty of standing space outside though, so probably a decent enough pub for post work summer drinkers or year-round smokers.

Hmm. I’m in a bit of a dilemma here. On the one hand, this is a decent real-ale venue(owned by Youngs); on the other, they’ve undertaken a major refurbishment which has stripped out all the character from this famous pub, which was renowned as a bastion of real ale in the days when it seemed that keg might rule the world. The pub itself is located just opposite Covent Garden Opera House, on a stretch of road known for its French restaurants. The exterior looks traditional enough, but the interior is a modern confection in dark wood, with brown leather sofas, tall square stools, feature wallpaper and painted walls delivering a clean, modern feel: you get the picture. It’s not objectionable at all, just a bit characterless and anonymous. It now seems to appeal to a modern, young, slightly trendy crowd, with the odd tourist thrown in. As well as the large downstairs bar, there’s an eating area upstairs(which I’ve not used). The beer is its salvation, if you like Young’s beers. They have Ordinary(bitter), Special, Winter Warmer and Bombardier on at the moment: if you like dark, rich beers but don’t like stout, try the Winter Warmer. You may be hooked. Be warned that it has Covent Garden prices: Winter Warmer is £3.50 a pint, Bombardier £3.40. Ouch. The food is the standard modern pub range: perfectly OK but, again, nothing memorable. So, overall, you could do an awful lot worse if you are in the area, but it’s not somewhere I’d travel to these days.

THEMARQUESSOFANGELSEY located in Bow is spread over two floors and very recently has undergone a long needed refurbishment. For a long while it has been a quality traditional pub that always dished out great food, drinks and service. Conveniently located on the corner of Bow Street and Russell Street, close to many theatres it is a perfect magnet to attract theatre audiences to their bar and dining quarters upstairs, and this venue looks very impressive and tastes even better. We warmed up with a bottle of White French wine and Prosecco:-tasty platter of nibbles consisting of a very generous helping of Salt and Pepper Squid dish served with a lightly barely there crumbs. It was a welcome change from the heavy variety you often find in pubs who don’t spend a lot of time on food preparation. The house’s thick handcut chips made from fresh Potato were perfect for scooping up the Tomato and Mayonnaise Dips whilst downing pints of Young’s finest Ales– a Peroni or a Leffe. But if you have panchant for White Wine we really truley recommend the Terramater Vineyard Reserve Sauvignon Blanc from Chile-it was so good we did not stop at the one bottle. The Rib-Eye Steak came in a good size and was grilled exactly the way I like it accompanied by a delicious, aromatic Pepper sauce. The Fish-Cakes and Beef-Burgers got an A plus. For the dessert the four of us rated the Apple Crumble as very high because the combination more Apple and less crumble tasted good as did the Chocolate Brownie which was rich and delicious.
