As I live beside the place, I’ve been a lot. First, the coffee is spot on. I’ve chatted with the owner, and he clearly knows what he’s doing. Their freshly roasted beans are what goes into my French press. Second, the help. Sometimes, the help hired doesn’t match the bean quality, and the drink suffers. Once, they ground my beans as espresso grind instead of coarse, a mistake I very soon noticed(they promptly ground a new bag) Third, a little pricey. This is major Tom to ground control, please keep the quality control high!

Very nice little coffee shop that offers ‘artisan’ sandwiches and brownies. A good selection of tea and very good coffee. Some seating outside and inside with good view points for watching the Amwell residents go about their business.

Lovely coffee shop on a quiet street. Decent coffee. Not a lot of space but enough if you wanted to have a coffee in a relaxing environment.

Great small coffee place. A little bit too small, but the drinks make up for it, and the patio is amazing in better weather.

Amwell Street is a gem of authenticity in London and Ground Control fits right in. A cozy coffee shop(note – small, only a handful of tables) with cute outdoor seating(again – a couple of tables) but small is beautiful, right? Coffee is good – always happy with my latte and they have lovely looking cakes and sandwiches on offer. My one complaint is that there is no music – it needs a bit of ambiance and some good tunes would give it a new dimension. If you are ever on Amwell Street though, stop in for a latte.

Ground Control — get it, get it? Yeah, it’s punny, but the coffee is legit. This is not a late night spot, but if you are lucky enough to have a few spare hours during the day, you are in for a treat. Luckily for me, this is just a few shops down from our(newly found!) dog groomer(Great & Small) and so like the nervous parent I am… I wanted to stay close. Bingo bango, welcome to Ground Control. There are several things that make me happy in a coffee shop: 1. Freshly brewed, attentive coffee. Check. Flat White = flat amazing. 2. Nice, sturdy seating. GC doesn’t have much, but what it does have is solid.(3 tables) 3. Light food options. Cakes and the usual bits… but great fresh sandwiches. Order early, once they’re out, they’re out. 4. WIFI. Gloriously free and strong wifi. They have it. 5. Friendly staff: check. 6. Beautiful ceramics: Robin’s egg blue china? Don’t mind if I do. 7. Swirly milk foam art: check. 8. A cute bulldog puppy. Ok, not all coffee shops can have this — and this particular one with the leopard collar didn’t live at the coffee shop, but was accompanying another guest. Bonus for me! All in all, a great spot for a cuppa. Will be back next time I’m amblin’ down Amwell. **cash only.

After having cycled passed this tiny hole-in-the-wall-café on village-like Amwell Street for a good 6 months, I ventured here specifically in search of some good coffee. My high hopes were not let down, good coffee I got– served rather leisurely by the affable Antoine who knows a fair bit about his Ethiopian blends. He roasts a new blend every couple of weeks and if you know which you like best you can custom place your espresso order. Now, even better than finding decent coffee, is finding delectable treats to consume with your cuppa, and my does GC satisfy you here! I was left feeling very sheepish about the sprint speed at which a slice of the olive oil, rosemary and lemon cake was devoured, absolutely superb!(and I’m guessing lactose free too, if that concerns you). The lavender and walnut cookie was also delicious, but I think it will be a battle between coffee and cake for which one I come to seek out here! The loyalty card is in the pocket.

Ground Coffee is the coffee shop outlet of the Real Ethiopian Coffee Co. Unsurprisingly it is therefore their Ethiopian coffee on offer and it is very good indeed. I enjoyed a well made double Macchiato and my companion was equally pleased with her Latte. In addition to coffee a small selection of cakes were available. I enjoyed a Chelsea bun which had just the right level of stickiness — yum! The café is pretty small — just a couple of tables inside and a couple outside on a small terrace but the intimate vibe is nice and I can imagine spending a while kicking back and relaxing here for a while. One point to note is that it is cash only — so make sure you have some change before heading here.
