We were floundering around London looking for restaurants. We were in the mood for Itialian so we took a chance. We had three Italians with us, two Americans and a Swede. The atmoshere is nice, the food was nice the service was good; there was nothing wrong with it. It just wasn’t outstanding. We had a reservation for 6, but they accomodated us at 2 round tables sort of shoved together. Overall, it just wasn’t great.

In the historic Leadenhall Market, which is very busy during the day and quite during the night. Great experience to go there in the evening too! I thought: «Pretty market, the food is prob. not gonna be that good» — wrong! All super fresh ingredients! Great service. From the outside it does not look as you would have a great meal. It requires that you to push yourself down the stairs to be amazed. I tried only vegetarian options and they were absolutely well prepared and tasty! The Portobello, spinach, tomato appetizer and the pomodoro gnocchi and the tiramisu. Even after the best Italian restaurants in São Paulo, the fantastic home made food from Veneto, Piemonte and Rome — Giorgio does get 5 stars! The prices for London are just great.

From the outside, Giorgio’s is unassuming — tucked away at the entrance to Leadenhall market, all you can see of the restaurant from ground level is the tiny glass porch entrance, set within what comes across as a temporary wall. However, descend into the subterranean restaurant and the interior is a world away… The classy Italian décor and table settings of a high-end establishment contrast with the entrance. The staff are genuine Italians and are exceptionally friendly and attentive — at one point our table of two was being served by 4 waiting staff! The food itself was delicious, although somewhat hit-and-miss when it came to value for money. I chose the asparagus gratin to start, and was immediately thankful that I wasn’t paying the £10 for a few sprigs of asparagus sautéed with cheese and oil. My main course of gnocchi was, however, delicious and the freshly baked focaccia was a welcome entrée. The complimentary limoncello was a personal finishing touch. Not a bad Italian at all, and perhaps the meat and fish is worth the price point for you carnivores out there. The service is excellent — I’m just not quite convinced on value for money.

I have been to Giorgio’s about six times in the past. It’s a very good experience at each visit. Dedicated staff truly make you feel like home. They start by presenting exquisite bread platters, and I strongly recommend the house fiascos. Ask for olive oil and balsamic, it’s delicious with the giant green olives. I’ve had the chance to try loads of Mains there, and all are worth a try. The fettucine with crab meat are delicious albeit slightly dry. The linguine alle vongole are great, and very juicy, while the penne all’arrabiata and the gnocchi alla sorrentina are to die for. For dessert, the crème Brulee is a perfect end to a great meal.

An expense lunch, and but for the location I would probably come back again to eat here with non-work aquaintances! It is bang in the middle of the city, just behind Leadenhall Market, and as such, everyone there at lunch was suited and tied, and discussing business. It’s not a location I’d travel to, I’m still a stranger to the Square Mile, but the meal we had was lovely. I had crab spaghetti which was fantastic — loaded with good olive oil, just the right amount of chilli, and a satisfying portion. The other dishes that showed up looked good too — porcini papardelle and pigeon ravioli. I actually wanted to lean over and dig my fork into the papardelle but apparently tnicking food off your boss’ plate is unprofessional… There’s a massive bread selection, and we had a good bottle of chianti. The service was fun — the team are shouty and Italian. They dropped a bowl but it was more entertaining than anything else since they dealt with it well. You get amarties on the table with the bill — I love it. Like I said, I’d come back if it were somewhere else but it’s an odd location for me. I wonder how busy it gets in the evening — at lunch it was heaving and we were lucky to show up and get a table — we had to be out in an hour since we hadn’t booked.
