Was a great place to get fish and chips but the staff are now rude and not helpful as they now think the public owe them very sad AVOID

Easily the best fish and chips in London. Would strongly recommend the £5.50 meal with mushy peas.

This place is one of the reasons I don’t usually trust Unilocal while in London. Based on Prior reviews, «Best Fish & Chips in London» means, «They use frozen fish, fry it really greasy, water comes out when you cut into it because it was still frozen when they fried it, and the fries are limp and floppy.» At least that’s what we got. I’ll take Seashell of Lisson Grove any day over this place. The folks at the counter were friendly, though.

Fantastic. Great dish to start out a mid-day in London. My friend and I woke up around 11ish, he asked me if I wanted jerk chicken or fish n’ chips. My rapid reply would be fish n’ chips. Luckily, he lives 10 minutes walk away from this distance, and from far you could already smelled the frying of different fishes-to die for. We ordered a haddock to go, and oh my gosh! It did not fail to impress. Crispy coating with that warm fish inside. So fresh and tender to the mouth, no complains from me. =] Overall, it is pretty good. but no tartar sauce? PS: lunch time can be SO busy. we ordered fast but waited for quite awhile.

An American goes to London, and likes Fish ‘n Chips. This wasn’t my first attempt to find something that helped me understand the obsession. Well worth the trip. I knew when the local firetruck showed up for dinner, I was in good company.

Having no idea where to find authentic fish and chips in London, I did a quick Google search and found that George’s is Jamie Oliver’s favorite spot for fish and chippies. If it’s good enough for Chef Oliver, it’s good enough for me… George’s is a small, take-out establishment. There are a couple stools inside, but if those are occupied, you’re sitting at one of the tables out front. Service is quick and no-nonsense. I enjoyed the simplicity of this dining experience. The cod was oh-so-amazing and fresh and was enrobed by a perfectly crispy, golden batter. The chips, on the other hand, left a lot to be desired. The outdoor seating provided a nice setting for watching diners throw the chips to the pigeons in the street – they didn’t eat them either.

I asked the ladies in a kitchen shop where they would have dinner and they pointed us here. It was fantastic. Apparently voted the best fish and chips in London. It was lovely.

I had to stop by George’s Portobello Fish Bar and a recent trip to the Saturday Portobello Market in London since it is supposed to be so highly recommended. I had the standard fish and chips with beans and a coke; a good deal for 6 pounds but the food was disappointing to me. The fish was just barely cooked and the fries did not have much taste so I will not return.

This is probably my favorite place EVER to eat fish and chips. And MUSHYPEAS! Super cheap, delicious food, great outdoor area to watch people near Portobello Road. Just a little takeout place, no credit cards, CASH. 5 pounds for a lunch special. Perfectly battered, crispy Cod — DRENCH it in malt vinegar(or maybe that’s just me), crispy chips and MUSHYPEAS! MUSHYPEAS! Outdoor area seating, no atmosphere, unpretentious, cheap, take out, no frills. I love this place, and this one of many reasons why I wish I lived in London.

I’m working in the area, so discovering this place independently was a godsend. Wasn’t aware that it was quite popular already, but I can see why — the prices are great and the food is to die for. You can keep your fancy restaurants, I just love fast food done right! There wasn’t any queue when I went, during lunch time in the middle of the week, but perhaps that was an anomaly. Didn’t get the fish the first time(my mistake, it seems!), but rather some yummy barbeque chicken with a very generous portion of fantastic chips. Also had a strawberry slush, which was perfectly sweet and only one pound! I think I know where I’ll be spending my lunch breaks in the future.

Not even close to the best we had. Actually just OK. Service not friendly. Fish bit greasy and chips dry with a weird texture. Disappointing.

Very good fish and chips. Ironically the whole time I lived in London for study abroad I didn’t have very good experiences… so when I returned for a visit last summer I didn’t really expect to even want them. So glad I found George’s. If I ever come back across the pond… I’ll make a run on the tube up to Notting Hill to a place that I can count on.

Oh my word. If ever there was a case of a place being rated because of where it is, this is it. I went there a few Saturdays ago for a portion of chips. I thought it looked like a bog standard chippy until I saw all the plaudits all over the wall. Either they have the greatest PR ever or, simply, people from around Portobello don’t know good fish and chips. It took ages to get served, despite the queue being short because the guys just had no urgency. Then one of the guys got in an argument with some kids in front of me and said something racist. I took them back to my friend’s house, which is about two minutes away, and when I opened the chips on the kitchen counter, the paper was running with oil. The chips were beyond greasy, it’s like they had been marinated in oil. I rated my old neighbourhood chippy low but on their worst day, they’re better than this. If Jamie Oliver rates this place, he really needs to eat some decent fish and chips.

I once had a job where Fish-and-chip-Friday was virtually compulsory so I can assure you I’ve tried and tested the menu of George’s and luckily it’s very good. It’s also a favourite of Jamie Oliver’s so they must be doing something right. You wont find a soggy fish finger in sight here. You get all types coming and especially at lunch times it’s always really busy. Since as they cook every fish from fresh(no waiting around by the those heated counters) it can take a while, so we found it was best to ring in our order and then you can go collect it all nicely wrapped up and waiting for you. This was great from work, but I’ve also done it successfully whilst out shopping. Yes, I have their number in my mobile too. The portions are huge and the fish batter is light and temptingly crispy, whilst the mountain of thick cut chips are really superior to others and to top it off you get a couple of lemon wedges too. The friendly Greek owners really are doing a great job of getting a traditional British staple spot on. Some of the best I’ve tasted, almost as good as in Yorkshire…

There are few places in London that do great fish & chips. George’s is probably the best that I’ve been to, and is pretty local. The fish & chips are delicious, portions are more than substanial and it’s not that expensive. I usually venture down here on the odd Friday. It’s apparently a favourite of(Chef) Jamie Oliver &(Designer) Julien Macdonald. Located in the rather quirky/trendy Portobello Road, it’s also a great spot to walk around and have a look at the nearby stalls — there are even stalls serving a variety of ethnic foods, so a great area to come back to.

George’s Fish Bar is hailed as one of London’s best fish and chip shops. The frequent queues are testament to the high quality fast food– perfectly battered cod is the speciality served with a generous portion of chips. The pictures dotted around show that famous faces such as celebrity chef Jamie Oliver and designer Julien MacDonald are also fans. Fantastic service, fantastic fish and chips which is I why I love going here.
