Em, why did I even end up here in the first place? Tucked on a street a little further than the Shoreditch area, this is a gay club packed with a weird mix of East peeps. Do not know, but this is usually the first place my gay friends hit up on a night out, or, on a Sunday night, or a night where you just can’t be asked to go anywhere else; AKA a place that’s not the first on the list. They charged an £8 entry including one drink, which was a little ridic considering how small the place is inside. There is coat check, People are usually really chatty here(wonder why), drinks aren’t the cheapest, it gets quite packed, and not sure how far good music can go here.

My brother and I went there last Saturday night as we had to leave Barcode in Soho and 1am.(I couldn’t believe they ended Barcode at 1am on Pride night but that’s another story). We were going to stay and Soho but decided to try somewhere different and made our way over to Angel. Boy was that a mistake. We were charged £8 each entry which I thought was a little pricey. We arrived at the bar and all they seemed to be selling was Stella Artois for £4 each. I am not sure what the music was suppose to be but it was like being the middle of oil refinery; tuneless and dull. The music improved, in my opinion, about an hour later and people responded by filling the dance floor. However, it soon returned to its«oil refinery » sound soon after and the crowd promptly dispersed. The only saving grace for me was one of the barmen with a shaved head was easy on the eye and I told him so. Guess that’s the last time I will see him because I am NOT going back!

Hidden below a kebab shop in a small but perfectly formed maze of rooms below City Road is Eastbloc, the coolest new kid on the East London gay nightlife scene. Eastbloc is only open about 2 nights a week and has a variety of nights going on. Although predominantly a gay club, they don’t turn away any straight people looking for somewhere to dance. There are two main rooms, and on the night I visited, one played dance(or house or something, I lose track of what dance music is called these days) whilst the other played cheesy/disco tracks on the right side of cool — classics, gaga, 80s but no ‘raining men’ thankfully. Apart from these two rooms there are quite a few smaller rooms to sit and chill out in away from the crush of the dancefloor. It’s quite cruisey in there especially on the big nights. The bar is cash only and the whole place reminds me of Ghetto before it relocated to Old Street and died a slow death. Unlike certain places in Soho, I didn’t feel too old for once. Expect to get very sweaty. Update — I have been back, it wasn’t as good as the night they had Gutterslut on. Check website to see what’s happening, don’t just turn up. In response to this I have deducted one little star.
