Great if you’re into sh*tty service, mediocre food, rodents and absolute filth. We popped in for a pint and a sandwich today. Floors, bathroom and dining room were incredibly dirty. Like, cobwebs in the toilet, thumb size distance bunnies floating around the dining room and massive amounts of dust and cobwebs in eyesight behind and around the heaters. The floors looked as though they hadn’t been washed in a month. The dining room had dirty dishes on every single table. My husband had a hard time getting served by the bartender as he kept verbally dismissing him as someone who had already been served even though my husband kept insisting he had NOT been served.(it was kinda weird) We ordered cheese sandwiches which were just okay. Dry with zero condiments. Basically a vegetable sandwich with grated cheddar. Not even butter. Six chips in a ramekin and a salad of a lettuce leaf, green tomato and onion slice. No dressing. Meh. We watched a couple of mice dominate the dining room while we were there. Cute, sure. Sanitary? Uh… NO. In the bright side, it’s been several hours and we don’t have food poisoning. So there’s that.

Stopped in for lunch after walking the entire Portobello Market. Ducked through two adorable tiny wooden doors to get to our table. Fish and chips came with peas :) Pints of reserve cider were ice cold. Bar staff were friendly and helpful, food arrived quickly, was hot, tasty, and affordable. Recommended.

Came in here for a drink because it started to rain and ended up staying here 5 hours after it had stopped. Great bar ladies and customer service. I didn’t order any food but did steal some from my friend who had so I know they have nice meals and desserts.

My husband and I stopped in here after a morning at the Portobello Market. We got two Samuel Smith beers and they were cold and delicious. We had eaten at the market but the food looked good and they had great prices. Great pub with a very unique look and atmosphere. The service was great and very friendly. A most stop if you are in Notting Hill.

Quintessential British PUB. Good fish and chips. Quaint dining areas divided by small wooden doors. Nice beer selection.

Hier habe ich den schlechtesten Burger meines Lebens gegessen. Muss man auch können. Trotzdem 2 Sterne wegen der außergewöhnlichen Wohnzimmeratmosphäre im großen Saal.

I’m not sure how one chooses from one pub to another. This one was a bit deserted, but it was nice that they had an open private outdoor seating area for us to enjoy our beers especially on a sunny day. I got the apricot cider. Refreshing but expensive.

This is the style of pub I would see in the movies. The kind that you walked into and just said«I’ll have a pint please» and they brought you a tall glass of beer. At first moving here, I thought all pubs would be like this. It is amusing. and cheap as chips! They have those tiny little doors that I love to bow through. And the beer garden is huge.

Absolutely love this place. The Earl of Lonsdale is a Samuel Smith pub with good and fairly cheap food and drinks made by their own brewery which is always great! Big dining room with real fire places and old(the original) wooden snugs. They have a big beer garden which is full of tourists and locals during the weekend. But there is always a free table somewhere. Great place to enjoy some pints with your friends on a lazy Saturday afternoon.

interesting set up! there are walls between sections/tables, and small doors… so you have to duck under each door to get to the next section or eventually to outside. it’s a hassle if you have to use the restroom, but an interesting concept. they ONLY had their own beer i believe they said? i got the hard cider which was very appley and delicious! it was too early for a beer. their chips were OK and their risotto came out very quickly and wasn’t great. if it was JUST the cider, i’d give them more stars! we came at noon so can’t really judge the ambiance, it was interesting. overall, 2.5 stars. not sure if i’d come back.

I love this pub. Great beer, cheap beer, good interior, lovely garden. The list goes on. Just check it out. An excellent example of what a good pub should be. 10 Points!!! Didn’t try the food. The beer is ace!

From the outside the pub looks small, but actually there is a spacious room with cosy chairs and a high ceiling at the back. Also, a big garden. We went there to celebrate my friend’s birthday and only bought drinks there as we had cakes and fruit with us and the staff were very nice about it! Very nice place, not too loud(and it’s a Friday night!) so possible to sit and chat there.

I’ve never heard of this place, but my friends LOVE it. I came here this past Wednesday, ordered a lager, oh I didn’t know they only had Samuel smith. cool, who is he again? My beer was fine, tasted like all the other beers I’ve drank before. Priced at 2.40pound, it was a good price. There’s inside/outside seating. Inside is warm, but I love the outside seating! When it’s not freezing that is. They have lights and trees all around, table is made of wood, cool place to chill and chat with friends. It is a bit of walk from the tube though, i don’t think i’ll be able to find it again if my buddy isn’t with me.

Honestly, I’m very suprised to see the high marks for this place. I went there today with my wife and all I can say is, ugh! The staff was nice, other than that this place was very unremarkable. We arrived at noon a wanted a quick meal. We each ordered the Chicken Burger. BIG mistake. The chicken was terribly tough and half the size of the bun. Hands down the worst sandwich I’ve ever tried to eat. Tasted as if it had gone straight from freezer to the microwave where it was overcooked and dried out. Perhaps it was just a bad day or we ordered the one item on the menu that happens to be the worst thing they serve. However, I would say that there certainly seemed to be plenty of happy people with good looking meals as we walked the rest of Portobello Road. I would try any of those before returning here again.

The Earl of Lonsdale definitely falls at the lower end of the gastropub scale. Actually, it’s probably more a pub with food than a gastropub. Lots of local characters were drinking in the main bar when we arrived(old man’s pub!) We headed to this venue for their weekly quiz night.(Tuesday nights at 8.30pm). The pub itself has lots of character. The main bar area is divided into snugs which can only be accessed through tiny doorways built into wooden section dividers. It’s kind of fun to walk around the bar this way through the tiny doorways. We arrived at 7.30pm and had a quick meal before the quiz began. There is quite a range of items available on the menu but they all fall into the traditional pub fare category. The meals themselves are a little brown(tinned peas and cabbage) but weren’t inedible. The quiz is very England-centric which I guess is expected for an English pub(but is a little more challenging for this Aussie). The quiz host wasn’t very social. He didn’t come around and introduce himself to the teams and he didn’t even mark the answer sheets. You do your own marking and at the end he just asks for the top three teams to come up to the bar for their prizes. It kind of takes the fun out of a little bit as you don’t get to hear the other teams’ names and you don’t get to find out where you’ve placed(unless you’re in the top three). Samuel Smiths is the brewery for this pub and the beer is very reasonably priced at £1.80 for a pint. That was enough to make the boys happy.

We decided to visit the famed Portobello Road market on my second day in London. Since we were confronted with a pub outside of every tube station we travelled to, we decided, WTF, let’s just go to the pub and three hours later the market will be that much better. The ambiance at Earl of Lonsdale was the best I’ve ever seen in a bar. It made me a bit sad to think that I have to cross an ocean to get a drinking experience like this one. It’s a nice change from the upscale lounge New York is famous for, in which one might feel a bit/a lot intimidated. Yet it is a million steps above a typical New York dive bar. Even the most uppity of your friends will be comfortable here. Getting around the place was a bit challenging for my companion because of all the little archways, and he’s extremely tall, so I was in fine form as «the short one», finally in my element and able to navigate with ease. Notting Hill folk are quite outgoing and we acquired a few new drinking buddies. The Earl of Lonsdale will be one of my first stops the next time I am in London. ***DISCLAIMER*** This could easily be a review for any other bar in the area. How could you possibly expect me to be coherent enough to remember? Although I do remember laughing at the name of the place incessantly during the rest of my visit. EARLOFLONSDALE… ha ha ha ha ha!!! See?

Another lovely branch of the wide spread Samuel Smiths franchise. Located right on Portobello Rd, this is a great place to pop in for a pint whilst shopping around Notting Hill. As with all Sam’s pubs, the guest ale is really cheap which is a welcome change from the expense of the area. It does get rather busy though, especially of an evening or weekend. Nice ambiance, and the people of Notting Hill are generally a very attractive breed, so it’s aways a pleasure to visit here.

One of my favourite pubs, especially in the summer. There is a really lovely beer garden, that is great on those warm summer evenings, just to chill with some mates and a glass of wine. The bar staff are always chatty and friendly. The interior of the pub is quite kooky and cosy, with weird little mini entrances for dwarf like people obviously, as you have to bend quite a lot to get through them but it makes it all the more fun.

The Earl is a pretty good drinking establishment in Notting Hill — and probably the cheapest one at that, being as it is, Samuel Smiths. I like the interior… pokey corners, wood paneling… open fires. It’s also quite big. Sadly they don’t have any hand pumped ales here, which is a real shame, as Old Brewery Bitter isn’t quite as nice out of a keg. On the plus side, it has real character, and all day drinking won’t break the bank… at least not till you lose your job anyway!
