Today(my birthday), I decided to go to City Boot for lunch with colleague since on a previous visit(for drinks), I thought it was a nice warm atmosphere and hidden away so not too busy. I’m saddened to say I will NEVER go there again. Firstly we had to sit there for over 15 mins without anyone coming to serve us. The waiter came over asking if anyone else was arriving, I wasn’t sure but we asked to be served anyway(shouldn’t be a problem, should it?). Anyway he grumbled and took our order and said the food would be 30 mins. I made a booking for 12 people. 10 turned up but this did not warrant the rude waitress from throwing the spare chair across the room(as she delivered my friend’s plate of food late) and complaining about it! As we left the waiter came up to me and said that given the poor tip we gave him, it was hardly worth his while serving us. What a cheek!

Tucked out of the way on Moorgate Highwalk, this is the exact place you picture old British journalists coming for their 17:00 scotch to feed their alcoholic cravings after an already boozy afternoon. They have a surprisingly decent selection of wines as well and are clearly trying to go «upmarket» to compete with the increasingly sophisticated tastes of the younger City crowd. Regardless, it’s an excellent place to meet friends after work as it’s usually empty in the early evening and is virtually right above the Moorgate tube station.

Another hideaway in the heart of the City(well Moorgate) similar to El Vino’s London Wall. A bit old style but good wine list and service. A bit of an oasis if you want to get away from stand up only crowded pubs. Some seats outside.
