Built in 1929 and now Grade II listed, Conway Hall is a landmark of London’s independent intellectual, political and cultural life.
The hall plays host to a wide variety of events from conferences and lectures to concerts, dance classes, drama, festivals, film screenings, charity fundraisers, filming location and more.
Open seven days a week, the building offers a unique blend of historical charm combined with a distinct choice of rooms for hire.
History
Established in 1929.
Conway Hall is owned by Conway Hall Ethical Society, a charity registered in England and Wales, and was first opened in 1929. The name was chosen in honour of Moncure Daniel Conway (1832 — 1907), anti-slavery advocate, out-spoken supporter of free thought, biographer of Thomas Paine and appointed lecturer from 1864 until 1892.
The Hall now hosts around 2000 lectures, classes, performances, community and social events a year. It is renowned as a hub for free speech and independent thought.
We have a library which holds the Ethical Society’s collection, which is the largest and most comprehensive Humanist Research resource of its kind in the United Kingdom.
Meet the Manager
Jim W.
Manager
I first discovered Conway Hall and Conway Hall Ethical Society in the autumn of 2010. At that time, I realised I had discovered an entity both professionally interesting and personally engaging. Put very simply, the amazement I felt at discovering that there was such a thing as an ‘ethical society’ galvanised me to apply for the role of Chief Executive Officer.
My sincere hope is that many of you will also discover Conway Hall and find something to enrich or intrigue you. From our atmospheric Library to our fascinating programme of Sunday Lectures, there is something for everyone. There are our historic Sunday Concerts, with a breathtaking pedigree, our courses on Humanism, delivered with panache by lecturers from London School of Philosophy, and then there are our hirers who take over our spaces and dance Salsa and Tango or debate Human Rights issues and have festivals!
There is so much going on!
Have a look for yourselves and let me know what you think.
