Specialties
Our 40 seat repertory cinema specialises in showing films that shaped the art of cinema — covering the entire history of the medium, as well as presenting auteur cinema and radical new artists’ films and videos. Whilst other cinemas are converting to digital, Close-Up will continue to offer 16 mm and 35 mm reel-to-reel as well as state-of-the-art digital projection.
The cinema is also available to host press screenings, corporate hire and presentations. With 40 comfortable seats, the theatre is fully accessible for two wheelchairs, and equipped with DCI compliant digital projection (DCP), reel-to-reel 35 mm, 16 mm, DV etc, and a 5.1 surround sound system.
Our library houses a collection of over 19,000 titles specialising in early cinema, classics, world cinema, documentaries, experimental films and video art. It includes rare films exclusive to Close-Up and by independent filmmakers not represented by distributors.
History
Established in 2005.
Close-Up aims to make film culture and history accessible through its cinema, library and the online publication of Vertigo Magazine. Established in 2005, Close-Up opened as a video rental has built up its activities on the basis of reinvesting all its profits into creating an extensive film resource.
In January 2015 we moved to our current location on Sclater Street, equipped with a brand new café/bar — finally opening our purpose built, 35 mm equpped, 40 seat cinema in July of the same year.
