Food is always of a decent standard and you get what it says on the tin. The service is always somewhat scatty and you can be left alone for an age before getting what you want ordered/delivered to your table. Every time I have been there, I have ended up having to go to the till to pay as we’ve been sat waiting sometimes for over 30 minutes. Wouldn’t go here for something special, but pre-cinema food is fine, as long as you keep an eye on the time and make sure your waiter/ess knows you haven’t got hours to spare waiting to get served.

Living in Texas, one food you eat a lot of is Tex-Mex so you tend to be able to tell what’s good and what isn’t. Coming to the UK, I didn’t expect there to be great Tex-Mex options but I did think there would be a few places of over-priced imitations, which i’m sorry to have to say that this place is. My first impressions of the place were very positive, the restaurant is tastefully decorated in authentic Mexican décor and has a classy feel to it. During the week they do a happy hour from 5−7pm and have a nice bar and waiting area where you can enjoy some of their great cocktails. To eat I had nachos and smoky chipotle barbecue chicken wings as a starter and some ribs and Cajun chicken as a my main; a tender half rack of ribs and a cajun chicken breast covered with bacon and melted jack cheese served with jalapeño coleslaw. This was all washed down with a few cervezas, Corona to be specific, which i’m sorry to say was the only thing I couldn’t fault. On previous visits I have tried the enchiladas, burritos and sliced fajita steak. They did taste good but nothing to write home about and some of them I could have made better myself at home. Unfortunately that’s usually the thing you get with chain restaurants; an overpriced imitation of a certain type of food. There are things I lived about Chimichanga and I have been here a few times. The food is tasty in parts but not at the price it’s being sold for. If you try it just don’t expect authentic Tex-Mex and treat it as something to fill you up and their take on Tex-Mex. However, at £50−60 for two people, for that price I’d prefer to go somewhere I know the food is great and that I’d get my money’s worth.

I have to totally agree with dotmit, what is served here is pretty far from Mexican food. However, I live in a country where it seems virtually impossible to cook a steak correctly. I order rare and Im lucky if I get it medium. Not here however I can order a rare ribeye and although I dont get it quite as rare as I would cook it myself, its certainly medium rare/rare which is a massive improvement on most places. The steak isnt bloody either, just a lovely red/pink in the middle, it is obviously rested correctly at room temperature before being cooked. So finally, I have found somewhere that knows how to handle steak properly. This fact alone raises Chimichanga from a middle of the road 3 star rating, to 4 star.

Hah! This is not proper Mexican Food! I only wrote this review in response to the previous 5 star one! This place is more tex-mex than Mexican. I can see how it appeals to the uninformed but for anyone who’s ever had real Mexican food, this just won’t do.

Chimichanga was a definite favorite when I used to live in Finchley. The cuisine is heavily Mexican influenced, though they also do a great selection of grills with Latin American twist. Some of my favourites were: Mexican crab cakes, all of the Chimi wraps, Mexican Paella. Nice décor, even though it’s in the same complex as the leisure centre, and from what I recall a few years ago, some very cute and friendly waitresses.

Mexican food! Lots of choice for both meat eaters and veggies. Lots of parking being on a leisure park! Very friendly staff. Do private parties. Is best to make a reservation especially on a Friday or Saturday night as you can end up waiting over half hour to be seated. Great interior design, subtle, suitable background music, not expensive, very tasty food, all in all a nice dining experience.
