As soon as the receptionist picked up the phone, I immediately understood that he was not able to communicate properly. When I was ordering a whole chicken and chips, he hung up the phone, just before saying the word«chips». Then I phoned again and asked if I could order my food, the unique answer I got was: «if you call us again, I will report you to the police». This is completely unbelievable, cannot even explain how bad the customer service is. After some more missed calls, I went to the shop to discuss this terrible incident with the store manager, all he could say was«sorry», but I am under the impression that customer service levels won’t be improved, given that this is not the first time I experienced this.

The taste of the chicken is like how KFC use to be. The taste is better than KFC is now.

I very much doubt that a company like Chicken Cottage have a flag ship store, but if they do this is probably it. I don’t mean this in the sense that the food is of a better quality(they will always be the poor child of something like KFC); more that this place is huge. I have never seen a fried chicken store with a couple of big screen TVs showing Sky News or Sky Sports News before. The food isn’t going to wow, though if you happen to be a large group of people requiring a quick feeding and chicken is the collective want, this place will do that job. Clearly someone thought the need to fried chicken is very high in this area of Tooting.

A friend of mine is in a bad way up at Springfields Hospital in Tooting so we decided we would visit armed with his favourite takeaway, good old fashioned fried chicken! We popped into Chicken Cottage and got him some wings and chips which, by the look on his face, turned out lovely. I however ordered the chicken wrap which comprised of two small fried chicken pieces and in a very dry tortilla wrap. So dry in fact, that it fell apart in my hand. Not good. Like my man Yee Gan, I advise sticking with the colonel.

Chicken Cottage is a brave outpost for fast food amongst the Indian restaurants of Upper Tooting Road. Despite its name, you can actually get other fare here besides chicken. However, being a KFC fan, I felt obliged to get the chicken to compare it to my benchmark The chicken was moist but a little soggy and not as tasty as KFC. Which goes to show that the Colonel’s secret blend of herbs and spices are still the business
