I tried Burrito Mama after reading the excellent review written by Angela. I downloaded the app(this makes rush hour lunch so much simpler!), placed my order, set the countdown timer to 20min(an option on the app) and headed out of my office. I ordered the Veggie Baby Burrito, despite the name this is a good size and it was totally worth the walk. My order was ready upon arrival and delicious! Would definitely recommend the app for a speedy service. Also note that Burrito Mama is on the 1st floor of One New Change(I might have gotten lost :)

One of my favourite places to come for lunch when I’m at work. It’s about a 10 minute walk away from office, but I enjoy stretching my legs(have I ever told you the story of the time I walked from Southgate to Wood Green and back again, just to go to Primark? That’s a seven mile round trip, on foot. If I want something, I will cross oceans to get it), plus t’s located within One New Change, so I get to nose around H&M on my way in. Huzzah! The best thing about Burrito Mama is their handy app — you can select everything you want to order and then choose what time you pick it up — how cool is that?! It also has a built in loyalty card system too, so you get a virtual stamp for every order you place. Make five orders and receive a free dessert(tres leches cake — HOLLA!), make ten and get a free burrito. Nice. Seriously, download the app, it’s a game changer. Once you get inside the store itself, I can totally understand why people are low scoring, it’s fast paced and all about a quick turnaround, without really anywhere to sit. However, because I tend to come here about once a month, and always seem to have the same lady handing my order, I get quite a personal service. I’m remembered, and said hello to and asked how I am, before being given my order and sent on my way. I always have the same — Mexican green rice, black beans, guacamole, crunchy slaw, crema, melted cheese, salsa, chargrilled mixed peppers, onions, courgette and Mexican oregano. I’m not usually a fan of courgette, but sit beside me and let me tell you a story *pats chair* For the last year, perhaps longer, I’ve been getting lunch once a month from Burrito Mama. That’s at least 12 burritos. Until I read the menu, just now, in order to write this review, I thought those courgettes were aubergine. AUBERGINE. How can an otherwise disgusting courgette be so juicy, so tender, so flavoursome, that I would think it’s eggplant? I’ve no idea, but Burrito Mama manage it. Get the app. Place an order. Celebrate at your desk at your new discovery. Buy me a burrito to say thanks. You’re welcome.

Pacey eat-in/take out operation, offering much the same sort of fare available from any of the other London burrito chains. One thing that is a bit different is that they have eschewed the assembly-line-with-lots –of –options approach, with a more straightforward order/pay/collect approach. The downside is that you therefore have less chance to customise(although this no doubt does wonders for their food costs). They do have a wholemeal burrito option(big tick), everything is tasty and fresh(tick), and portion sizes are moderate(which is fine). Bit less salad than one might like in the burrito, and the«hot» salsa, to my taste buds at least, is a bit anaemic.

Usually I love take away Mexican street food(I’m a West Coast American living here in London) I heard this was Wahaca related and I love the little cart under Wahaca at the Southbank … BOY was I disappointed! Bought the burrito pot– I had no beans, so I paid for extra veggies(there went the 50pence discount for the vegetarian option). This thing came out and was so small compared to their burritos AND had only one scoop of veggies. Seriously, what is the normal sized veg portion?!? Also, for a £6.00 pot(which did I mention is the size of a soup portion from EAT) of a mexican vegetarian option I would have expected guac– but nope! Also, no salsa option, so very little flavour until I added the only available choice which was the extra habanero sauce, that was just too hot! Super conveniently located to me, so very disappointed– will have to find a tortilla or Chilango– even Wrap It Up(while not authentically Mexican) is better quality/value for money. Will not be trying this again.

This has replaced Sumo Salad(which I loved, so it had a lot to live up to) among the lunchtime options on the 1st floor of One New Change. Seems the Burrito craze is finally reaching the City, and I’m happy to be able to indulge in my lunch break. Burrito Mama have an app you can use to pre-order your food but I didn’t know this in advance, so had to ‘make do’ with the swishy high-tech self ordering touch screens. These allow you to select your order, customise and add extras like drinks then pay by card(this is even faster and more impressive if you have a contactless card). You then get a ticket with your order number on it, and keep a hawk eye on an Argos style order progress screen until you are called. I opted for a Baby Burrito(didn’t want to suffer a post-lunch desk coma) with pork pibil — spicy and filling. This belongs more in the ‘sloppy’ burrito category as opposed to the ‘fresh’ side of the market which I prefer, but that doesn’t make it bad. A big plus point for Burrito Mama is that their burritos include guacamole as standard — most mexican joints charge rather a lot extra for the good green stuff!

I came here very hungry with my boyfriend and tried their pork pibil burrito mamma(minus beans). I really liked the flavour of my burrito. I got a medium salsa, which was very flavourful and worked well with their veggies in the burrito. I also ordered their guacamole & tortilla chips. I must say, their guacamole was GREAT! The chips were fresh and tasty. The guac comes pretty mild but I added some hot sauce for a kick. The guy who rung us out was super friendly and really nice! The place was clean and decorated very fun and cute. Really liked this place, and I can see myself coming here for a pit stop whilst shopping.

Mixed feelings on Burrito Mama, the takeaway offshoot of the much loved Wahaca. Situated in one new change this spot is ideally located for city workers lunchtimes or a quick evening/weekend bite. The restaurant is decorated with quirky old newspaper clippings and corrugated iron flashing and is a pleasant environment to be in. The staff who greeted me were very friendly and were informative about the different fillings available; I liked that guacamole was included free unlike many other burrito joints where it is an extra £1 — £1.50. I had a half and half with chicken and pork pibil. The tortilla was fresh toasted and still striped with char marks from the grill, a nice touch, and was wrapped again in quirky newspaper print. Everything tasted fresh but I have to admit the chicken was not particularly flavourful and was actually cold, when combined with the cold guacamole and salad/cheese, this meant it was a pretty cold end of the wrap. This started me off on a bit of a bad foot, but upon reaching the other half with pork pibil, things picked up. The pork was very juicy and had been slow cooked with tasty spices. This saved the meal somewhat and meant I gave burrito mama a 3 instead of a 2. If the chicken can be tweaked a little(I’m thinking more seasoning, crispy skin and please keep it hot!) then I would definitely come back and review it again higher. Can’t fault the service as all the staff were very friendly and smiley. Would come back again.

When Burrito Mama launched a few weeks ago, Twitter was abuzz with excitement at a new burrito place in the City. You’d think we’d experienced a burrito drought(well we sorta did when Kerb got kicked off the Gherkin and Luardo’s had to set up shop at Whitecross instead) with all the huzzah. Burrito Mama, to celebrate their launch in One New Change, offered a free burrito for everyone who popped by from 12−4pm. So naturally, I did. The line was epically long even at 11.45am when I showed up — after waiting 20 minutes I realised it wasn’t really worth that much for a £6 burrito and elected to come back a couple of weeks later. Definitely a better idea as there was no line to speak of although I have to credit this more to the speed of the assembly line they’ve set up. It felt like I had barely ordered before the tortilla was steamed, meat and beans scooped in, the full range of toppings layered on, and the entire thing rolled, wrapped, and bagged. I’ve seen some expert burrito lines but this one takes the cake. Unfortunately, the taste didn’t quite live up to the execution. The wholewheat tortilla(I know — bad decision) was a tad soggy and very chewy which got us off to a bad start. The meat was also a bit underseasoned — after being cooked for hours in spices, I expect a potent mix of flavours rather than the light meaty taste my pork belly had. Also, if offering pork belly, make sure to render the fat a bit otherwise it’s less melt-in-your-mouth and more chewing gum. The«hot» salsa was more akin to chilli ketchup than any real heat and was quickly lost in the guac and sour cream. All in all, it wasn’t a bad burrito, just not a good one. For £6, it’s a decent value proposition on the face of it and for most will undoubtedly be a perfectly good lunch. If you are a spice lover like me then you are probably better served heading to Freebird near Liverpool St or waiting for the warmer months when Burrito Joe returns.
