History

Established in 2008.

Most of the current staff at Buddha on a Bicycle originally ran the long established New World Crystal shop in Neals Yard Covent Garden.

When the business was forced to close down at short notice, the current owners of Buddha on a Bicycle decided to found a new business in the covent Garden area, to continue to provide similar products to all the wonderful and loyal customers who had visited and supported New World.

We found the perfect location with extra space downstairs to provide a therapy room for all the therapists, yoga practitioners and meditation guide who had also visited us at the previous shop. We have now been established for 5 years and going strong.

I so enjoyed meeting all the fantastic and enlightened people who came to New World in Neals Yard. I felt deeply drawn to re establishing a permanent space where many of these loyal customers could continue to buy the incense, Buddhas, Crystals, Jewellery etc that they had always been able to find in the previous shop. But also to be able to practise and offer to the public all their knowledge in their particuar area of expertise, be it: Yoga, Meditation and Healing therapies. I felt it was my mission to continue to make all this available in Covent Garden and Gilly my co owner and manager of New World agreed to come on board with me and share her extensive knowledge as a manger, and behold, Buddha on a Bicycle was born

Very needed nice little store in the centre of London providing calm within the chaos. A nice atmosphere with many differing pieces to look at, a variety of stones, jewellery, fragrance, books…
A nice place to browse pretty objects, absorb the calm and focus on you, things for you and your well being and reminding us its time to relax.

Buddha on a Bicycle has an excellent selection of Tibetan and Nepalese items, including the singing bowls and tinchas seen in many «new age» or «esoteric» shops, as well as items I’ve never seen anywhere else. I have no idea how the prices compare to other shops in London and the UK, but they are reasonable compared to what I’ve seen in stores in the U.S. and Canada.

Alternative shop and Therapy room on two floors, offering a good selection of quality crystal gifts and psychic development books and cards. The cosy Therapy room downstairs is used for a variety of workshops run by psychic Becky Walsh, and other like-​minded visionary counsellors and healers. You can also make appointments with healers specialising in Reiki, Holistic Massage, Theta Healing, Spiritual Guidance and Tarot. Lunchtime and evening Yoga drop-​in sessions are also available.

Espying some prayer flags in the window, I excitedly thought perhaps I would be able to stop into this shop for some yogic supplies (as I haven’t been able to locate a single shop in London that sells such things!). Upon entering, however, I was sorely disappointed. Aside from the prayer flags on display that appeared to have Indian sutras on them and a carrier bag with an ‘om’ on it, I didn’t find much of use.
Instead, the shop was filled with trinkets, incense, statues, jewellery and crystals, everything amazingly expensive.
In short, the shop had nothing that seemed to fit into this sentence, ‘Oh, I need to pick up [insert useful item here]; I’ll go to Buddha on a Bicycle!‘
There’s a studio downstairs where treatments and classes are held. But, if I’m honest, it seemed more like an afterthought or an easy money-​making venture than anything else.
The store IS cute, though. I mean, who doesn’t feel a little cheered up by the turquoise signage?

This seems like the most eclectic shop on Endell street. I was wondering if they sold bicycle stuff when I went in, and I realized it was just a comment on urban spirituality. Which is epitomized by commodification, even if in a cute shop, in Covent Garden.
Anyway despite my own cynicism, I like the look and feel of the shop, its books on Buddhism, many Buddha statues, and the little bicycle inside. Its all a mish mash of things, but interesting put together. I don’t think a serious Buddhist would find anything here, but the urban spiritualist, whatever that is, might. Or just a cool Buddha statue from East Asia.

This shop used to be a delightful restaurant called Designer Sandwiches which was run by a lovely Indian couple. It must have closed down some time over the past year.
It’s nice to see that the space has now been used as an alternative shop rather than a mainstream one.
The lady who runs it is very friendly and always willing to help you out.
They have a great selection of candles, books, gem stones, relaxation cd’s and many other wonderful things that you only find in alternative shops like these.

I once heard the fascination with semi-​precious stones referred to as an addiction. If so then I may have a problem. There are a number of alternative or astrological shops in Covent Garden where you can find beautiful semi-​precious stones. My favourite choice has to be Buddha On A Bicycle, a recent addition to Endell Street. It is a clean, bright and uncluttered shop, which alongside their collection of stones sells jewellery, a few spiritual objects and incense. Much less daunting than the moon worshipping, witchcraft shops that you normally have to buy stones from.
Stones vary in price depending on the type and the size but are very reasonable, utterly beautiful and enticing.
